Mesh and Landclass

Featured Replies

What is the difference between terrain mesh and landclass files. The reason I ask is that i recently downloaded Holger & Ferrantis excellent Alps terrain mesh files. and having flown around them in a default Cessna I decided on a commercial IFR flight. Firstly I got the ISD Milan airport and then downloaded Frankfurt-Main. Having taken off from Frankfurt I was disapointed in the basicness of the MSFS scenery around the Rhein. So. Next I downloaded Rainer Dudas German rivers and this improved the area quite well. However there is still a lot of scope for improvement so I again ventured into the AVSim libray and I have come across downloads offering terrain mesh scenery and also landclass. Basically my question is what do I go for to improve the ground textures and scenery. Best regardsMichael

Think of mesh as the "shape" of terrain--mountains, valleys, canyons, etc.. Landclass is "land use"--forest, farmland, city, desert. Landclass tells MSFS what class of textures to use when flying over the Sahara desert, and mesh tells MSFS how tall the sand dunes should be. The Alps are fun to fly with Holger's mesh update and with some of the popular landclass updates. One of the things very attractive about the area are the miles of meadows and farmland that abruptly end at the foot of the massive mountain formations--you get such a huge contrast of colors and scenery.-John

Hi there, here a link to a thread that lists freeware landclass add-ons for central Europe: http://forums.simflight.com/viewtopic.php?t=49134Like John said, neither of the available landscape elements - mesh, landclass, and accurate water/roads - are all that spectacular on their own. However, bring the three together and the (mostly) boring and inaccurate default FS landscape is completely transformed.Cheers, Holger
