Ground Environment - does it replace Ultimate Terrain?

Featured Replies

I'm somewhat puzzled about Ground Environment. Is it supposed to replace Ultimate Terrain? Or is it supposed to compliment Ultimate Terrain by allowing auto gen scenery to be better placed on top of Ultimate Terrain-enhanced ground textures?Or does Ground Environment do more than just auto gen object placement AS WELL as something different than Ultimate Terrain? (if so - just what exactly?)Also, for best results (but without any photo-real terrain packages) - does one need higher detail mesh (such as FS Global 2005) and / or a land class package? Or does Ultimate Terrain (or perhaps Ground Environment - if it in fact is replacing Ultimate Terrain) already contain land class information as well as higher detail mesh?If these questions have been addressed in another thread - please kindly point me in the right direction.Thank you,Michael

UT does not enhance ground textures - it simply accurately places coastlines, roads, rivers, streams, railroads etc as well as providing some better landclass for city areas. There's some fundamental concepts to understand here:1. Mesh - this the elevation map for the terrain, the shape of mountains etc is determined by this. Products like FS Genesis are mesh.2. Landclass - this is the mapping of what texture gets applied to what area on the ground. It's not the textures themselves. Basically landclass says "Put dense urban city texture here" and FS loads whatever texture is associated with that description to the area. The texture itself is changeable and not dependent on the landclass. UT includes landclass for major city areas, bringing the amount of urban sprawl etc up to current realistic levels. FS Genesis also makes a landclass file for the whole USA, including rural areas, which a lot of people use in combination with the UT city landclasses.3. Textures - These are the actual bitmap texture files loaded and viewed based on what the landclass calls for. This is what GE, BEV, and FScene do.Basically, to get the optimal effect, you need to have UT USA, mesh, and a ground texture replacement. I'm currently using UT USA, 38m FS Genesis mesh, FS Genesis USA Landclass, and GE.
