Custom Aircraft Panels & Radios That Won't Tune

Featured Replies

I have been having a problem for the last year which has kept me from being able to fully utilize and enjoy the many cool freeware panels that are available for download in the FS community. After Googling for information on this, and finally finding just 1 out-of-date post which no longer exists on a forum at FlightSim.com (but which I nevertheless found with the magic of Google's "cached copy" option - Thank god for Google!), I finally remedied my long nagging problem. So I am posting this here in the hopes that search engine spiders might find it, making it a search result for anyone else searching the net for a remedy to the same problem. After installing "aftermarket" panels for my various Boeing 757 aircraft, I found that I was unable to tune the COM and NAV radios, regardless of the fact that I was given "+" and "-" symbols when mousing over the numbers or tuning knobs. I couldn't figure out what the deal was. I could never make an ILS approach when I got to my destination airport because I couldn't tune the dern NAV radio to the ILS Approach Frequency!I assumed that the panels must have faulty gauges in them, or that the panels themselves must be faulty. But after downloading and installing like 5 different panels and still having the same problem, I realized that there must be something else going on. I was right!Much thanks to a user by the name of Tom at FlightSim.com (username "Tom182S"), whom I will forever appreciate for his long lost post!! :LAST EDITED ON Mar-11-04 AT 02:08 PM (EST) Locate the particular aircraft's folder, usually with this path C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFS2002aircraft (or wherever it is located on your computer). Open the particular aircraft's folder and open the "aircraft.cfg" file with Wordpad (or whatever you use). Scroll down to the section Radios in square brackets. It appears you do not have standby frequencies for the panel and the section should read as follows:-(Radios)in square brackets (cannot use these on the Forum)// Radio Type=availiable, standby frequency, has glide slopeAudio.1=1Com.1=1, 0Com.2=1, 0Nav.1=1, 0, 1Nav.2=1, 0, 0Adf.1=1Transponder.1=1Marker.1=1This allows you to change the radio frequencies on the panel in use.Edit as necessary and save.If you want standby frequencies, change the column of 4 zeros to 1's.Note:- The numbers 1 and 0 refer to the 3 categories after //Radio Type=, where 1 means active and 0 means inactive.Hope this helps.TomIn my particular case, the aircraft.cfg files for each of my Boeing 757 aircraft were originally set up for the default FS9 Boeing panel, and were configured with the "standby frequency" option ENABLED. But each of the custom panels I have attempted to install don't support this option - they all require changing of the PRIMARY frequency directly. In my case, the column of 4 zeros shown above was a column of all 1s. So I changed them all to zeros, thereby disabling the standby frequency option on each radio. This has made my NAV & COM radios programmable once again, and my new panels usable!!Thanks for the original post Tom, whomever you are!I hope this helps someone else out there...Chris Logan

Chris, Glad you finally got your radio problems fixed. Sorry you had to wait a year. A simple search right here in this forum would have produced the results for you in a heartbeat. The fix is also posted in the MS Flight Simulator Tips and Tricks forum (a sub-forum of this one) since April of 2003. Your "find" will be added to the found list for the next person using the search feature. Thanks for your contribution.

Chris,Excellent information, a great find. Thank you very much for posting it.I recently downloaded a really nice Beech King Air C90 from the library here at Avsim. However like you could not change the frequency on the radios. As you did, I got frustrated and searched and searched for a workaround or at least information on why it did what it does. I am very sure this is my problemm and will have a look at trying this out tonight once I am home from work. Thanks again, I have bookmarked this post!!EDIT: And thanks Brent for the pointer to the forum here. Perhaps I should have looked there first! :-newbie

Jason CYOO - Formerly MYNN[br /]General Aviation Fan[br]P4 3.2Ghz, 1GB Ram, FX5900 128MB, XP SP2.[br /][br /]
