Newbie paint questions

Thanx to Colin from Milviz I know that my new layers must be below their dirt layer and above anything else. Now, what I'm doing is showing up! All I need to do now is decide on PSP, PScs6, GIMP or PAINT.net and learn how to use whichever. Probably will go with PS - seems like a ton of videos available.

Found out that Gimp doesn't read the layers properly in the paint kit PSD files - that was not helping. 

ok, now to get started actually trying to DO something.
