May 5, 20188 yr This is a morbid curiosity question more than anything. I was recently looking around Sky Vector and noticed that there are two areas of airspace (XX02 and XX04, also labeled as No FIR and No FIR One respectively) that are labeled as having no FIRs. I looked on the ICAO FIR map and these areas are also unlabeled. One of them is just north of Norway and Sweden (XX02, pictures below) and the other is in the South Pacific Ocean just west of the Galápagos Islands. The only thing I could find after about an hour of searching online was from the Wikipedia list of Area Control Centers, which listed them as Nil. 1 (XX04) and Nil. 2 (XX02). I was just wondering if anybody had any idea why these areas have no ATC/FIRs, or if they do have ATC, who is responsible for it and why are the areas not labeled as being anything. Thanks in advanced, Aleks XX02 ( https://i.imgur.com/Q1vBg1m.png ) XX04 ( https://i.imgur.com/QX0Iied.png )
