price reduction in add-ons

Featured Replies

We all know how expensive this hobby can get. However, for most of us, we somehow find a way to make such purchases. Once FSX is released and on most of our computers, how much of a decrease do you think we can expect on FS2004 add-ons? I am hoping that we will get great deals on bundled world mesh scenery (for most geographic locations and seasons) at a much reduced rate. I am sure you guys can think of others.RH

I don't think that we'll see any huge discounts from the developers porting their add-ons (especially aircraft) to FSX. Some developers have already announced either no support for FSX or a free upgrade.I think a lot of add-ons, especially when it comes to scenery and graphic improvments will become more or less obsolete with FSX - I am thinking mainly about textures and eventually mesh, but, of course, we don't know any specific details about FSX yet (LOD, etc.), so it's all speculation.Pat

I really don't know why scenery and aircraft payware would go into the bargain bin when the new sim comes out. Likely it will go the other way. The more capability the sim has the more slick features and graphics they can provide, and the more work they have to do to release a quality product. The prices are going up, not down.We already see an upward trend in prices for FS 9 releases. Look at the very nice but outrageously overpriced Cheyenne Aerosoft just released. $45 US now for a twin GA plane. Yikes!Rob

You may see products that are not going to be provided for FSX drop in price, but new products are likely to remain at the same price level or go up.Price levels are determined largely by the time needed to create the addon as related to the expected sales volume. That time needed is only going to go up as an ever smaller group of hardcore customers demand more and more "realism" and eye candy. If FSX sells extremely well you may over time indeed see a small decrease in the cost of lowend addons aimed at the mass market, but that won't effect the highend addons you seem interested in. They'll for some time yet suffer from ever increasing production cost in an environment of an ever smaller potential market (due to the fact that the younger generation can't often be bothered to want to read through hundreds of pages of manuals).
