X demo: hardware for X versus 2004--

Featured Replies

I just downloaded and installed the demo last night. While it looks ok, I guess, I'm getting a lot of jerkiness, and overall, at least with the demo, I'm disappointed. My system is far from state of the art, but it isn't really that bad...AMD64/3200+ igig DDR400 ram, Radeon 9600/128meg video.... So a bit old for video card, but not that bad otherwise.I tried doing a custom setup, but ended up getting the mesh all messed up...plus there were no textures...all black, including the plane control panel. The mesh had spikes sticking out of it. I tried backing the autogen off, but ended up having to set everything back at default to even get anything decent. Even then the sim ran choppy. So, to me, it appears a new system would have to be purchased to run this, especially with any kind of decent graphics and dynamic scenery. The MSX site says it will run on a lot of systems...older stuff, but surely it won't run anywhere near hi res with even what I have.Any thoughts?

It's been mentioned that, due to the way AMD reports it's CPU speed, FSX may give you lower default settings then would be optimal for that system. However, that stuff about the mesh sounds like you've got some other really weird issues."Let me help you out. You're cleared to taxi any way you can to any runway you see."

after looking a bit closer today, the mess is only in virtual cockpit mode.

Hard to say what might be going on. I think I recall someone on some forum saying they had "spikes" in the graphics as you report--don't know if it was solved. Your specs are close to mine. I had a 9700pro 128mb and it ran OK. I went ahead and bought a Geforce 6800GS 256mb and it now runs great! Unless there is something wrong with your system (improper drivers, system instability, etc., etc., ad nauseum) your computer ought to run the demo fine (don't expect maxing out all sliders). Also, remember that there are plenty of known issues in the demo related to un-optimized code.Good luck.Randall

If by mess you're talking about black VC windows, then that's a known issue mentioned in the readme."Let me help you out. You're cleared to taxi any way you can to any runway you see."

ah..yes...I glanced at the readme, but didn't really pay attention...thanks>If by mess you're talking about black VC windows, then that's>a known issue mentioned in the readme.>>"Let me help you out. You're cleared to taxi any way you can>to any runway you see."

as far as frame rates with that 6800...I tried to max the sliders pretty much..get about 5-8...where is it with a more modern card, given my system?

Running autogen at sparse (good enough with high resolution terrain and besides there's a bug that eats frames with autogen). Scenery detail is maxed. All others are about medium setting with AI at low setting. Of course, using 1m terrain. Water is low 2x. It pretty much stays pegged at 24 fps which is where it is locked.System:Athlon XP 3200+Nforce 2 400 FSBGeforce 6800GS1 gb DDR RAMSoundblaster X-gamerRandall

thanks Randall...that's significantly better than what I'm seein gin the demo...well, hopefully I'll get some overtime at work to buy a new vid. card :)
