October 15, 200619 yr I know a lot of people have been complaining about fps and performance. I know I've been lucky. I've found settings I like and my performance has been reasonable considering my computer is 2 years old.Anyways I put together a short movie that just goes to show you what FSX can do in terms of world scenery rendering. I think a lot of people forget that FS9 and any version before that had a slider for max distance rendered.(what was it 60miles max on the lowest setting and like 100 or 120 on highest?) And unless you had a huge performing computer 120 would bring your computer to a standstill crawl. Now watch the video and think about how well FSX actually performs under the circumstances eluded to above. A few notes, I was travelling at about 2000knots so the scenery was backed up but not at the expense of FPS. I don't think I evern dropped below 15fps in that video(although I may have and not noticed).Second there are a lot of blurries which is to be expected at 100 000 feet. You could see well beyond 300 miles away in that video(probably much more although I'm too lazy to figure it out. Put it this way, it was at least 300 miles radius which means 600 miles total view from one side to the other(at least that's my best guess). To be quite honest, it's pretty impressive that the sim can render that much and when you take into account that you're seeing at least 3 times farther then the max setting in FS9... I know I can start to appreciate the work done. heck in FS9 increasing to 300miles distance would probably just kill the computer permanently :-)
October 15, 200619 yr Author Hello Drew,FS X preloads all terrain data for the radius chosen in the setting. Because all terrain is already in memory and pre-calculated, the game need only display, and processing is cut to a minimum. This explains the smoothness and the pretty good performance for such a spectacular increase in terrain detail. Great programming on the part of the FS Team.Best regards.Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
