October 17, 200619 yr my tests so far suggest that no setting on the video card or in the sim can decrease the amount of shimmering on 2.x water. it's most annoying looking in the direction of the sun, some 30-45 degrees downgranted, it's light years ahead of fs9, but if anyone knew how to kill that shimmer at least a bit...thanks in advance(the card is a 7600GS)
October 17, 200619 yr sorry, i lied when i said "no setting on the video card [...] can decrease..."--i meant to say "remove"turning off AF on the card and leaving it to the sim does calm the water shimmer madness a bit
October 17, 200619 yr Author The water effects are one thing I can live without personally, this is a flight sim after all, not a scenery sim, so I currently have it on 2x low I seem to recall. Before I dropped the water effects, landing the DH seaplane on the water out in a bay on the coast of California, the glass-like reflections looked totally inappropriate for the sea with it all cranked up. Maybe they would suit some bush flying off a lake in Canada or whatever, but I've never seen the sea looking like that, except in a very sheltered harbour with calm weather, so off it goes to 2x low, giving a reasonable appearance at medium to low altitudes. In any case the water effects are definitely the poor relation in comparison to something like say, Silent Hunter 2 or the Pirates of the Caribbean game. But of course FS would probably require a new 3D engine to get that kind of effect, and to be fair, I doubt that Silent Hunter's flight physics are up to much, so it's horses for courses really.FSX is running okay on my computer and I'm getting reasonable frame rates with everything else cranked up and the autogen turned off (not a fan of autogen, so that's no loss, never had it on in FS9 either).I put my decent frame rates down to my ATI pci-x graphics card and I've no doubt they'll speed up even more when I eventually get around to buying some more RAM, as I've been threatening to do for some weeks. Then of course Vista and possibly the interim Direct X 9L or whatever it's called will probably improve things too. Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
