Innsbruck mission (G1000): ADF? DME? Where? I want them too!

Featured Replies

I just (succesfully) flew the Innsbruck mission where you do an approach in the Baron with he G1000. (Very hard mission... because I had to land with an fps of about 3 to 4. ;))The guy tells me he already got the NDB frequency in the ADF and he will watch the DME. Well... that's very nice but why can't I do that? There is no ADF and/or DME in the Baron with the G1000! I also wonder what I should do with all those NDB pages in the G1000 when I've got nothing to put the freqs in... Am I missing something or does the Baron/G1000 indeed have no ADF etc.?Now I do not really miss it, actually, but I find it very strange that a mission suddenly apparently can use the ADF and DME! It's already weird a guy is talking to you while you can't see him (and the Baron isn't that big!) but it is even weirder to hear him use instruments that aren't there at all! ;) But my main question is: why does the Baron/G1000 have no ADF and DME...? Or am I mistaken?I'm still loving it, though. ;)

I haven't flown that mission for a while and I'd have to look up the official language in the Far's to quote- but the distance on the gps (although slightly different due to slant range of dme) can be substituted for the dme-and the ndb (which should be displayed on the screen) also, as long as you have a current gps database.http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg

Hm, so the idea is that since you can see the NDB on screen you do not need an ADF...? But since I cannot tune in the NDB frequencies anywhere I cannot read the distance to it. Or do you also (quit simply) use the screen for that: when you're there, you're there...? And what if I can't find the NDB onscreen (when it is too far away or when the screen is cluttered)? And what if I want or need to be on a specific bearing? (I also remember seeing the CDI on the G1000 HSI, but maybe that was the VOR after the NDB...). And what should I do with all the NDB info on the GPS? I've got no use for that at all, it seems. Etc. etc. etc.But maybe I'm missing something...?(Does a real Baron with a G1000 also have no ADF (and DME)?)

You would do a direct to on the gps to the ndb-use the gps toggle switch to get it to show on your hsi. If you keep the needle centered you will be closer than if you tried following an adf needle..I don't know about a Baron with a G1000-but mine has an adf that is broken-and we use our kln94 gps in place of that when a ndb is needed.http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg

Ah, I didn't think of the Direct To! :) And I forgot about the CDI softkey. Thx, I'll give that a go tomorrow! ;)

Okay, I gave it a try and it works like a charm! Direct To an NDB, set the navigation soure to GPS with the CDI softkey and there you go! :) Thanks again for the tip! ;)When I'm flying with ATC in HDG mode I often fool around with VOR's and NDB's: I like to watch the needles turn, just to pass the time. ;) (And also to doublecheck everything, of course!) I'm glad I can do that still with the G1000. :)

Glad it worked for you! Yeah-I always mess with the vor's to double check just for fun-but with dual gps's in planes they will probably be going the way ndb's are..http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg

Hi,the DIR TO is indeed a work-around, nevertheless there should be an ADF needle to be able to properly fly the approach! I think MS made a mistake choosing this airplane for the mission - a simpler ADF-equipped one should be more appropriate. Also, do any of you guys have problem maintainin altitude and speed with this mission? With the throttle at max power speed slowly decreases to a stall unless I start descending below minimums...Spiros HazapisAthens, Greece

Hi,not sure... I guess not. I left it as it was when the mission loaded. Will try that, thanks!Spiros HazapisAthens, Greece

I had that same problem too: I frequently almost stalled. Don't forget to put on the de-ice (like 'the guy' says at a certain point): that helps too. But I sure didn't lean the mixture: maybe that might help also. But the way the mission is made you'd expect 'the guy' to tell you to lean the mixture, really... It's almost some sort of tutorial mission because he leads you through it all. So he should also have said to lean the mixture...And indeed, they should have chosen a plane with an ADF for this mission because 'the guy' actually says he set up the ADF and he is watching the DME which just aren't there in the plane. Very confusing. ;) It's just not right. It's almost like they made the mission with the normal Baron and decided later on they needed a mision with the G1000... and forgot to change certain things. ;)

I'll have to check it when I have a chance-but I seem to remember the adf needle on the rmi pointing right to the station? It has been a while though...http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg

Er... the RMI... Er... yes, there are 'backup' gauges on the right of the G1000, aren't there...? And of them is an RMI with an ADF arrow, huh...? Is that so...Darn, Geofa, why do you always have a perfectly simple anwers to my remarks...? It makes me look so stupid all the time...!;) ;) ;)I'll check it out once more... :)

Not at all-I'll have to check it out too-I just don't remember....but if you want to make me look good I'll accept it!Edit-there is no rmi-I was remembering wrong. I have to leave for work but I'll have a look at this one a little later...http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg
