My FS2020 tale of woe

Featured Replies

Well, as far as FS2020 is concerned, the shine is off the apple, the honeymoon period is over, and I'm pretty sure it's dead rather than pining for the fjords. :( That or... it's "systems failure" model is incredibly realistic. 🤪

I'd pre-ordered 2020 I think the first day it was possible (from the MS store), and installed it the morning of the 18th.

It worked well and in general I loved it, but right from the get-go, it had some weirdness with keyboard controls. The "pause" key is supposed to control "active pause" but almost never would do anything. Every now and then it would appear to work if you pressed it repeatedly, but if you pressed it repeatedly some more to "unpause", the game would end up in this weird state where the airplane was flying but would not respond to any flight controls.

Then yesterday I was flying the 787 over NYC when something similar but different happened. The plane was on autopilot and I tapped the key to increment the heading bug when all of a sudden the bug went nuts and started spinning around the dial like someone's head in a horror movie. For several minutes after that, the game would not respond to any controls... no response to the joystick, and I hit (and released) nearly every key on the keyboard without any effect. Eventually it got to a point where a few things would work, like <esc> to pause the game but nothing else. I closed the program, re-launched it, same result. Closed it again, rebooted the computer, re-launched, same result.

Then I went into the Windows "apps" screen, "advanced options" for FS, and tried "repair" and "reset". After that it would not launch at all... when I clicked the icon it would pop up two of those "Do you want to allow this program to make changes to your computer" prompts, I'd hit "yes", then it would pop up a message saying "this app can't open".

The above all was yesterday afternoon. This morning I tried launching again and got a different result: one "Do you want to allow this program..." prompt, then the program appeared to start, but after the usual several minutes' delay it displayed a "content manager" window and apparently I have to download the entire game again. Yay. :( I should add here that I absolutely 100% for sure did NOT uninstall the program!

</end rant>

PS I did open a support case for the issue... I'm concerned reinstalling might affect their ability to troubleshoot the problem, but I really didn't want to wait days with the program completely unusable for them to get back to me.

I have had the spinning heading bug phenomenon happen as well. (Several times and on different aircraft). Totally locks up the sim and won't take anymore inputs. What has seemed to help is instead of holding down the ctrl+del or ctrl+insert to move the heading bug, try repeatedly tapping the keys to get small adjustments until you get the heading you want.

Hey thanks for the input!  Unfortunately that's exactly what I was doing at the time (just tapping the key).

I did manage to recover from the disaster described above by letting it reinstall, but the problem with the heading bug is still there.  I flew the 787 for almost an hour yesterday, mostly on AP, and it was fine until I was close to landing and the heading bug thing happened again.  Using the joystick and on-screen controls with the mouse, I was able to get the AP mostly disconnected (altitude hold refused to disengage) and get the plane onto the ground in one piece.  After that, some keys started responding like the camera views and most importantly "esc".
