Hunting typhoon Haishen

Featured Replies

Just a post about MSFS weather depiction.

While I was planning another flight I got a typhoon warning from windy.com.

I ditched my other plans and started a flight from RKPC Jeju Intl, an island off the coast of Korea, not far from the storm centre. The intro screen greeted me with some promising wind info:

During the takeoff run I quickly realized that the wind could not have been 40 kts.

I climbed to 35000 and got some interesting cabin altitude warnings, realizing later that the max cruising altitude for the TBM is 31000. As I closed in on the storm, I was greeted by some spectacular cloud formations. And the wind, as reported on the Garmin PFD? 225@3...

As others have mentioned, it appears that winds are not injected into the sim, despite the fact that they are reported by ATIS and ATC. This became apparant as I made a visual approach into the Japanese island airport of RJDT Tsushima. Tower reported winds at around 20 kts. Coming in over the shore, there was some indication by the white-capped waves that it could be a bit windy.

However, the limp windsock proved otherwise.

This is of course very disappointing, as weather and environment is one of the main attractions of this sim. I've done a considerable amount of flying around in various places in the world in the sim, and although weather depiction can be quite striking, wind injection seems to be a weak spot.

I proceeded to Busan where the typhoon was heading, and apart from a very interesting VOR approach into rwy 18L (DME arc and a 90 degree turn towards the rwy just before landing), Busan did not show any signs whatsoever of being the next target of this tropical storm. Yes, tower reported winds of 230 at 48, but again I was met with another limp windsock.

So I guess for now we have to settle with the (amazing) volumetric clouds and hope that the wind issue is targeted in the next patch by Asobo.
