Would This Option Increase Performance?

Featured Replies

If we had an option to limit the number of views we could live with in FSX, would we see a performance increase? I'm suggesting another option set under the DISPLAY set where we could, for instance, select cockpit only with forward, left front and left side only as well. No externals, right, or rear quarter views. Maybe this would lighten the load on the CPU and GPU. Any view used that wasn't selected would be opaque if the simmer attempted to use it. Might have to commit to a specific zoom setting as well. The option set would allow any combination up to full views. I offer this to ACEs if it has any merit. If you're wondering why I'm suggesting this, my system is a P4 1.9Ghz, 512 Ram, 9600 Radeon. I'm actually enjoying FSX even in the high definition airport areas. Not what most would call smooth, but after awhile I got used to it. Sometimes I'm at 7 to 8 FPS in these areas. At the flight levels and in more rural settings I'm running 15 to 17 which isn't bad.

Nope, that wouldn't increase performance at all (those are just view angle/zoom/etc values) - as long as there's only 1 view window, the same amount of work is being done, regardless of which way you look (well, if you look at an area with more dense scenery that will obviously have more work than looking at less dense scenery, but you get what I mean :-> ).Tim

I thought some work was being done on views not currently being used. I know when I switch views for the first time, it takes longer for the view to snap in. When I return to that view it is much faster, so it would appear that something is being done to have a view ready ready for use. If I sit on the runway at JFK and look toward the city skyline, it takes quite a bit to "build" the image. If I then look forward and then return to the city skyline view it is much faster. If nothing else, maybe some storage in memory is being utilized.
