FS2020 Flight Plan Query

The "in-built" flight plan option with FS2020 is very simple to use for the more casual simmer, like me, and avoids the need for external software.

However, I have found that when I check the FMS it shows "flight plan not loaded" and so far I have found it's not possible to follow the chosen flight plan as was the case with x-plane when using autopilot.

Can someone explain if I am doing something wrong or do you need external software, such as Simbrief, to fully use the FMS?
