My Xbox Series X Flight Sim Review - being simmer for 20 yrs

Featured Replies

There we go! I will try to be simple, direct and easy to understand.

  • I started in the flight sim world in 2000s
  • I made sceneries, airplanes etc mainly for FS2004 and FSX
  • I own X-Plane, MSFS PC and now MSFS Xbox

Personal circumstances

Situation 1:

  • I love airplanes, I love flight sims, but I barely play them cause I don't have enough time
  • Flight Sim is an expensive hobby
  • I have:
    • Logitech X52 Pro
    • Logitech Throttle Quadrant
    • Thrustmaster Pedals
    • Logitech Autopilot Panel

Situation 2:

  • Sold my Gaming (or let's say "Flight Sim PC") and my 1080p screen for £940
    • Geforce GTX 1080ti, 32GB RAM, Ryzen 3600, 1TB SSD
  • Bought Xbox Series X for £450
  • Bought 4K 60Hz screen for £330
  • Bought Controller Adapter for £80

Well, the day arrived. In Xbox we pre-download the game before the launch on 27th July. But when I was going to play it for the first time... guess what? My sim started to update! Had to wait for 1h10min (100 Mbps internet).

The game launches quite fast, looks like the Xbox uses the storage technology it has to process the data. The menus are the same, bla bla bla, and I will not review this interface here. Yes, mouse and keyboard (if compatible) works in the menu but the mouse behaviour is bad.

Performance

My first flight was in Liverpool, where I live, with a Cessna. Flight Sim is capped at 30 FPS and it is noticeable. I used to get 50 FPS, 60 FPS in my old PC with settings in High and had a very good quality image (1080p render scale 130%). But now things have changed. I have a worse performance and I knew that. However, the airplane just... flies. Yes, it does and it is enjoyable, even at 30FPS. I recon that I prefer 60FPS than 30FPS, who not?

My second flight was in New Work with a 747. I used to get 19 - 25 around in the airport and 30, 35 maximum over the city. Now I get 30FPS and in 4K. The sim runs smooth. However, some stutters are still noticeable.

Keyboard and mouse works, you can click on the instruments, autopilot, etc, it is all good. Same as in the PC version. You can do everyhing, change radio frequencies, manage GPS etc. It is good and works. But as I said... the mouse behaviour, it is worse than the PC. I think they had to make it "worse" so the xbox players with the controller can interact better with the menus. It looks like the cursor has a kind of acceleration/deacceleration, which should help for those with xbox controller only.

The flight is good. I can just take off, use my Logitech X52 Pro and my Logitech Throttle to control it (yes, I can and I will tell you how) and it feels good!

Image Quality

The image quality is worse than the PC in Ultra settings. The anti-aliasing, anti-filtering, all the GPU stuffs looks better in the PC. The image in the PC is smoother and prettier. However, I can now play in 4K HDR, something I couldn't do before (my old screen was a 1080p, no-HDR, and I my old PC couldn't manage 4K). It is hard to say which settings Asobo has put in High, low, Medium etc, maybe someone in the future do a comparison with the PC version, but yeah, if you are going to Xbox, expect a worse image quality. I think it is something between Medium and High with some settings in Ultra (draw distance, 4K etc) and others in low (the refresh rate of the instruments in the cockpit are bad).

Controllers

I managed to use my Logitech Joystick and Throttle with the Xbox Adaptive Controller, but lots of buttons don't work. I will buy the Titan 2 to adapt them to the Xbox, I expect them to work.

Mouse and Keyboard work with no issues and it is a must.

Conclusion

Errr, yeah, PC experience is definitely better. I didn't have the chance to test the Sim Updated released today because I sold my PC so I don't know how big was the FPS increase with the update.

As I said, I barely played Flight Simulator and all my friends have consoles (we play Fifa and other games and they are not cross platform). But I am still a simmer, not a gamer.

Moving from PC to Xbox is a hard choice, but it will depends on each person. I sold my PC/screen for 940 and bought the xbox/4k screen for 780. And 90 for the Xbox Adaptive Controller (same price as Titan 2). So I have here £70 pounds profit. What I can say is that the 4K experience is awesome, not only for MSFS, but for the other games I play and for the things I do with my laptop connected to the screen.

The Xbox as everyone knows is not big compared to a gaming PC, which usually is huge.

The Xbox has a very limit set of devices to play flight sims (I think there are just 1 or 2 but more are coming! :D)

My advice for those who are thinking to move to the Xbox is:

  • Wait for reviews and, if possible, buy a Xbox with the return option so if you regret it you can return the console
  • If you are in a budget, just get the Thrustmaster Hotas One for Xbox (£80), the Series S (£250) and a mouse/keyboard (£20) = £350. You will be able to fly a wonderful sim for just £350. And, trust me, the flight experience is good. I doubt you can run P3D or X-Plane spending only £350?
  • If you decide to go with Xbox, bear in mind you will be limited with devices, customization, hardwares and addons.
    • There are already lots and lots of addons in the marketplace, most of them are compatible with Xbox
    • I don't think IVAO, VATSIM, FSUIPC etc will work in Xbox (at least in the short term)
  • Stay in the PC if you have money.

Feel free to ask any questions. I'm a simmer so I know quite a lot of flight sims.

Matheus
