TileProxy - Albuquerque

Featured Replies

Hi,Well, it semed to take forever to fill in the area with tiles of sufficiently high resolution but, boy, the wait was certainly worth it!http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/Cruachan47/AlbuquerqueFolder 0202 now contains 47,257 objects!!! (209MB)Christian, may I add my heartfelt thanks to you for this wonderful utility. For folk like me it's an ideal way to explore carefully selected areas of interest. My son and his wife with 3 of our grandchildren live in Albuquerque - hence my interest in this region. I have come across one apparent problem. When trying to d/l tiles for my home area around Edinburgh, Scotland the resolution is patchy. Some tiles show a great deal of detail whereas others remain stubbornly blocky. Rather frustratingly the blocky appearance would be around my home (sod's law), an area I know displays in high resolution when viewed using VE. Is there any way to force the loading of tiles in this situation? I've tried slewing back and forth, sitting over the spot for hours on end and assigning a key to force the reloading of textures but nothing seems to work. In the case of Albuquerque I found all I had to do was slew to the relevant spots, wait and eventually after 5-10 minutes the detail would pop into view. My Broadband connection is kinda slow by today's standards: 512Mbs, so patience rules the day. Mike

Saving the flight, going to the scenery library settings of FSX, hitting "OK" and reloading the flight often does the trick. FSX will reload all textures, giving TileProxy another chance to catch missing tiles.Christian

Hmm, personally I like Santa Fe or Los Alamos a bit better - more trees, you know ;)Los Alamos is CRAZY when viewed from an altitude. The geology ("wrinkles" on the ground) is plain cool.

Hi Christian,"Saving the flight, going to the scenery library settings of FSX, hitting "OK" and reloading the flight often does the trick. FSX will reload all textures, giving TileProxy another chance to catch missing tiles."Tried that, but sadly no joy. TP just sits there as if there is nothing left to load. This is what I mean:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/171619.jpgWhereas this is the sort of detail when viewed at highest resolution with VE:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/171621.jpgI appreciate I should not expect to see this level of resolution in the sim, but I was hoping for a little more. I know where my house and garden is, but can't make out any detail whatsoever. In the ABQ shots I can make out my daughter-in-law's parent's house and side street.Yes, I know what you mean regarding the area around Santa Fe. Still, I have been up the Sandia Mts. at ABQ on a couple of occasions and the appearance of the city sprawled out below me in the sim is uncannily like the real deal.Best regards,Mike

Hi Mike,>Tried that, but sadly no joy. TP just sits there as if there>is nothing left to load.Sorry to interupt. I had the same problem. What I did to solve it esd to assign the "refresh scenery" option to one switch on my yoke. You'll find this option in under "Controls" (I think) in FSX.So, when I fly around and I get these blurry images, I activate the switch. This pauses the flight, forces TileProxy to fetch the needed files from the server, reloads the scenery with crisp images. It takes some time, but once you downloaded everything, you're fine.Hope this helps and happy flyin'Louie.

that's a good tip! I shall add it to the manual ;)

I kinda gave up on tileproxy because the textures are usually never crisp and are always blurry. It's a great idea and when it works it's awesome but I almost always get blurry textures even with areas that have already been downloaded.________________________________________________________________________________________________Intel D975XBX2 'Bad Axe 2' | Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.20Ghz | 2 GB Super Talent DDR2 800 | Big Typhoon VX | eVGA 8800GTS @ 565/900 | Seagate 2x320GB SATA RAID-0 | OCZ GameXStream 700W | Creative X-Fi | Silverstone TJ-09BW | Matrox Triplehead Setup

I think I'm ahead of you both on that one :)As you can see from my original post, it too failed to resolve this issue:"I've tried slewing back and forth, sitting over the spot for hours on end and assigning a key to force the reloading of textures but nothing seems to work."I don't want to lose the Albuquerque cache, but it occurred to me that I might try deleting the tiles for my area and start the load again from scratch. My home area appears to be in folder 0501. Christian, Could I achieve this by simply deleting the content or renaming this folder (before recreating a new empty one) or will I have to include the cache.service1 folder as well with a similar operation? The latter currently contains 14,855 jpg objects (250MB).Christian, Can you confirm that I am correct in assuming I should be achieving a somewhat higher resolution level of texture tiles in view of my previous post?Cheers!Mike

You want to delete the contents of 0501TEXTURE.Leave 0501SCENERY intact or you'll lose photo scenery coverage. The cache.service1 folder should stay intact, as it speeds up rebuilding the textures.

What is very striking to me as I watch the activity in the "Load filter driver and run proxyUser" command window is the numerous number of failed attempts to d/l tiles at particular geographical co-ordinates. Generally the success rate seems to be higher if only a few tiles are involved at any LOD level. Otherwise, e.g. if the counter starts at, say, 64 then it may countdown/download a few tiles successfully before reporting a string of failures. There then follows numerous reattempts before you see that magical word "Done" and the process moves on.Sitting over stubborn low res areas in ABQ for an extended period of time usually had the desired effect and the higher levels of detail would eventually pop into view (although the detail is never as high as seen when viewing using VE). I managed to cover the whole area in this fashion. It's tedious, I know, but once you have cached this data then you can return to the area without needing to use TP.This does seem very inefficient and I am assuming this problem lies at the server level rather than with the end user unless, of course, the speed of his/her connection plays a part. This may be beyond Christian's control.Cheers!Mike

Your Internet line doesn't seem to be up to it.Lower the bulk_extend value in the proxyUser INI file a bit. Don't make this any higher than 25. This reduction may help somewhat, but for high resolution tiles at least 24 JPEGs will be downloaded simultaneously, regardless of the bulk_extend value. If your Internet connection is slow, you may run into timeouts on high resolution tiles. The outcome is that TileProxy will scale back the downloaded resolution on these failed tiles. In future version, there may be a limit to the number of simultaneously processed requests (independent of the bulk_extend value). Also the timeouts will be made adjustable. This should help people with connections of 1 MBit/s or slower a great deal.Christian

"You want to delete the contents of 0501TEXTURE."Thanks. Yes I meant to say the content of the "0501Texture" folder. I forgot about the scenery folder.BTW, in another thread you mentioned trying a value of 2.0 for FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION along with an "Unlimited" setting for the Target Frame rate to improve tile loading. This, I noted, does have a side-effect. I am probably stating the obvious here, but an "Unlimited" setting makes your GPU work a lot harder and consequently increases its operating temperature. Normally, while running FSX my GPU sits at around 54-56 degrees C with a Target Frame Rate of 25. When I changed this value to "Unlimited" I was impressed by the huge increase in fps (sometimes reaching the 80s) but soon became aware of an increasing level of fan noise (I have ATT configured to adjust the GPU fan speed according to temp). On checking I found that the GPU temp had risen to 68 degrees C - just 3 degrees short of the max achieved while I'm playing Oblivion. I know this is perfectly ok, but thought I should mention it anyway.I have to say this has been fascinating and is certainly filling in the time nicely before the expected imminent appearance of SP1. In the short term TP may not be the perfect solution for everyone (although the future potential is clear for all to see), but it does certainly add another wonderful dimension by allowing you now to explore in accurate detail areas of interest selectively. Without any hesitation, I join everyone else in hoping that you will receive due recognition and encouragement to continue developing this spectacular vision to its logical conclusion.Cheers!Mike
