System locks up in flight after applying SP1

Featured Replies

Hi,My system has been locking up a few minutes into a flight since I installed SP1. No response even with Ctrl-Alt-Delete so i've just had to turn off the machine.Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone give me any advice on this, it would be greatly appreciated? My system is a Intel Dual Core 6400, 2Gb RAM, XFX 7900 Graphic, running Win XP Pro. ThanksPete

My suspicion is overclocking or power. Perhaps video drivers but a hard lockup without a blue screen is rare these days with nvidia.SP1 has FSX using both cores by default which increases system load. I'm seeing more power drain on my system too with the cores being fully utilized now, and the video cards going full blast too. Truly something my PC has never done before. Suggestions:1) run your system through a stability test using prime95 (google it). If you survive this torture test with no errors for about 30 minutes or so, you are reasonably sure CPU heat not the problem. If it gives you any error, somehow the CPU cannot handle the speed or doesn't have enough power to it (usually due to overclocking).2) if you are overclocking the video card, try using factory defaults and see if you still see hard lockups. 3) make sure your power supply is not the problem here and can sustain the video card and the two cores.4) always visit Nvidia to get the latest certified drivers (I have a pair of 7900GTX that would blue-screen in SP1 until I got the latest certified driver off the nvidia web site).Hope this helps,Etienne

Hi Pete... Did you unistall/reinstall FSX and all add-ons prior to installing the patch per Phils blog recommendation?Regards,Mark >Hi,>>My system has been locking up a few minutes into a flight>since I installed SP1. Try waiting 10 minutes. Vista has been locking up on my since SP1, the hard drive light is hard-on and after awhile the mouse stops moving, about 10 mins later the darn thing pop back to life.My vista install and FSX hasn't been the same since SP1. Coincidence? maybe, maybe not.

With everything maxed out except bloom I got 10 FPS in KBOS. It was flyable and seemed fine. Took off, flew for 1/2 hour and got an error message "FSX has run out of memory". Shortly after it locked up in mid flight? That after clicking close on the error window.Running Vista-64 with 4 gig of memory.Still playing around with it.

Thanks so much guys for your very helpful advice and suggestions. Yes I was much too hasty in applying SP1 and put it in without any preparation. Also I didn't upgrade my video driver first. However I have traced the fault to a faulty memory chip - a G-Skill 1GB chip, so in this case it appears that neither of the above were responsible. However your suggestions have still been very helpful. Again many thanks for your input. Kind RegardsPeter
