SSC Saturday - SSC_Mifflin_320

Saturday, May 20, 2023   (UTC: 17:45)

MSFS Server: Southeast Asia

Sim date/time: May 20, 2023, 12:00 noon local

Voice: Sim Soaring Club (PTT)

- Meet/Briefing: Saturday, May 20, 2023   (UTC 17:45)    At this time we meet in the voice chat and get ready.

- Synchronized Fly: (UTC 18:00)  At this time we simultaneously click fly to sync our weather.

- Task Start:  (UTC 18:30) At this time we cross under the starting line and start the task.

Duration: 90 to 120 minutes (1h30 to 2h00) Pilots who finish this task successfully during the event will be eligible to apply for the Silver Soaring Badge NOTE: Mifflin has a MINIMUM FINISH HEIGHT of 1800 feet MSL (i.e. ~1000 feet above airfield)

The task PLN (or TSK for XCSoar users) for tomorrow, weather WPR is already posted.   Wind from NW, ideal for these Appalachian ridges.   320Km triangle, each WP is an airport.

Take-off and landing is to SW, i.e. r/w 26. Good thermals expected. This is a very typical Mifflin RL task with good ridge soaring along the tree-tops sometimes only 1000-1500 feet above the valley floor.   Generally you can see OVER the ridge to the terrain on the downwind side, and if you're low enough that is NOT the case then take care .

A great thing about the Mifflin area is the availability of landable fields close to the ridges - if flying gets tough and you need to land, you may find yourself on the ground in less than a minute. Look at the attached map and spend a few minutes planning which ridges you intend to use. Straight ridge runs are very easy, so enjoy the ridge and look at the same scenery the RL competitors at Mifflin will be seeing this week. Times should be quite close (I did 1:35) and it'll be the upwind jumps that count the most. Don't forget, as in the RL competition, finish height is 1800 feet MINIMUM. That's 1000 feet above the field so plenty of time to dump the ballast and fly a grown-up pattern to land to the SW on runway 26.
