July 13, 20232 yr Nova Scotia & Cape Breton Island We start this multi part summer tour of the Maritime Provinces departing Yarmouth and a quick circle of the Cape Forchu Lighthouse before heading north to Bier Island and the entrance to the Bay of Fundy, then across Saint Mary’s Bay to Digby. Crossing to the east side of Nova Scotia we pass over Kejimkujik National Park with a landing at Liverpool then Bridgewater. The route proceeds with a flyover of the historic fishing town of Lunenburg (home of the famous fishing schooner Bluenose) then overwater past the scenic St Margarets Bay to Peggy’s Point Lighthouse. We reach the entrance of Halifax Harbor at the York Redoubt Historical Site then to Maugher Beach Lighthouse regrouping at the closed and very bumpy Halifax/Shearwater airstrip. Our tour of Halifax includes the POI’s added in the Canada World Update including two bridges which can be flown under before a landing at Halifax International (CYHZ). From here we proceed eastward with several landings to Point Hawkesbury on Cape Breton Island. Most of Cape Breton Island will likely be flow at a later date. July 15, 20232 yr Today we visit the site of the Halifax Explosion, the world’s largest non-nuclear explosion. A result of a 1917 maritime accident involving a cargo ship stuffed with wartime munitions, the “2.9 kiloton” blast destroyed the northern quarter of the city and killed or injured one fifth of its population. An awful event. --Mike MacKuen
