Cape Breton Island & Prince Edward Island

Cape Breton Island & Prince Edward Island

We resume our summer tour of the Maritime Provinces departing Point Hawksbury with a long 60nm leg past the large Bras d'Or Lake which has a connection to the open sea, and is tidal. Our POI is 18th-century French fortress at Louisbourg.

The Fortress of Louisbourg was the capital for the colony of Île-Royale (Cape Breton Island) and was besieged and taken twice by the British. The fortifications at Louisbourg were systematically destroyed by British engineers in 1760 to prevent the town and port from being used in the future by the French, should the peace process return Cape Breton island to France.

We continue on to Glace Bay, the location of the Marconi and Marconi Wireless Station National Historic Sites and then land at Sydney (CYQY).  Departing Sydney we proceed to the Seal Island Bridge POI and then on to Baddock (CDW2) and our second landing.

From here the route proceeds northward to Cape Breton Highlands National Park, turning southward at Dingwall following the Cabot Trail, then leaving the highlands at the Acadian town of Cheticamp. The route continues southward with the Gulf of St Lawrence on our right.  We head a little inland for our final Cape Breton landing at Margaree (CCZ4).

We continue to the southwest, past Lake Ainslie to Mabou. The route then turns west for a long 54nm mile across the Gulf of St Lawrence to Prince Edward Island. We land at Cable Head Airpark (CCA4) and regroup before proceeding to Charlottetown (CYYG).

The final section of our route will take us to Cavendish on the North Shore of PEI and the home of “Anne of Green Gables” fame. Next POI is the Confederation Bridge and then on to the final landing at Summerside (CYSU).
