Procedures for a CTD

Featured Replies

Hello,

First time here, long time flight simmer. Up until now, I've never had a CTD. After the SU14, I now get a CTD on start up with an associated Error code 00xc0000096. I've tried to ensure all drivers are up to date, they are! Repair and reset do not work. Is there somewhere that I can report this to or any ideas about how I should proceed to get my sim up and running? Tank you in advance!

Most issues are caused by conflicting or buggy addons or hardware that is pushed beyonds its limit but MSFS could be the cullprit as well.

Have you made any changes to the sim before this happened? If the only change is de SU14 update, then it could be one of the addons is not compatible with it and creates a conflict.

I would start by renaming your community folder and see whether MSFS starts fine. if so, then the issue is most likely caused by an addon in there. I would them move half of the addons back to the Community folder and try again. This way you should be able to isolate the addon that causes the issue.

If the problem remains even without community folder, the issue could be in addons from the marketplace which are installed in the Official folder, or the sim itself. Isolating the addon is still possible but a little more tricky since you will need to be sure to only remove the marketplace addons. With a bit of logic it is doable though.

You can also try reporting it to ZENdesk but if the issue is caused by an addon it is much faster to troubleshoot the issue yourself.
The official forums can also be of help.
Info about reporting an issue can be found here: MSFS2020 - Zendesk Support and Reporting Link - Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) - The AVSIM Community

  • Step 1 - Enable crash dumps in Windows

Open Windows start menu and type: control panel
Press ENTER
Select System and Security > System.
Select Advanced system settings, and then select the Advanced tab.
In the Startup and Recovery area, select Settings.
Make sure that Kernel memory dump or Complete memory dump is selected under Writing Debugging Information. Restart the computer.

  • Step 2 - Install WinDbg

Download and install WinDbg (which you can d/l from MS for free).

  • Step 3 - Analyze the dump.

Next time tgjhat youk get a CTD, locate the dump file (use Explorer to search for *.dmp files with today's date). Run WinDbg as admin, and then select "Open crash dump...". Select the .dmp file corresponding to the time of the crash and let it load. In the window that displays, you'll see a line that reads, "For analysis of this file, run !analyze -v". The part that says "!analyze -v" will be highlighted in blue. Click it and it will run. Now you will see exactly what was going on when it crashed.

This is the only true and proper way to determining what is causing a dump (CTD).
