Tierra del Fuego

Tierra del Fuego

Tierra del Fuego is an archipelago off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland, across the Strait of Magellan.  The archipelago consists of the main island, Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, with an area of 18,572 sq mi, and a group of many islands, including Cape Horn and Diego Ramírez Islands. Tierra del Fuego is divided between Argentina, which controls the eastern part of the main island and a few small islands in the Beagle Channel, and Chile, which controls the remaining land area.

We begin this journey from Rio Grande (SAWE) and proceed southward for landings at Los Robles Airport (SAUY) and Tolhuin Lago Fagnano Airport (SAWL) before crossing the Beagle Channel into Chile for a landing at Guardiamarina Zanartu (SCGZ).  Heading westward we land next at Ushuaia International (SAWH).  Continuing westward along the Beagle Channel we cross the frontier into Chile and proceed up a fjord to Yendegaia National Park and a landing at Yenegaia Airfield (SCNY).  The next part of the route will require a climb up and over the glaciers followed by a descent down twisting valleys and a landing at Azopardo (SCAZ).  Heading north it is 26nm to Pampa Guanaco (SCBI), then 18 miles further to Russfin Airport (SCFN).  The route now turns westward 50nm and over Inutil Bay to Almirante Schroders (SCDW).  The final legs take us to Capitán Fuentes Martínez (SCFM) then across the Straits of Magellan to our destination Carlos Ibanez Del Campo Intl (SCCI) in Punta Arenas.

The route is 306 nm and an aircraft capable of 200knts cruise is recommended.  I plan to fly the SWS PC-12.   High winds and bad weather are common in this region.   June is entering winter conditions in the far south and there is a lot of snow and the likelihood of poor weather.  I have included two weather themes which should improve the experience.

  •        Custom Jeff Scattered 2.WPR  (multiple cloud layers – moody – a little dark)
  •        Jeff's Partly Cloudy.WPR  (fewer clouds – with more sun getting through – brighter than Scattered 2)
