I see that some early version (alpha?) of DX10 is available, does it appreciably enhance the graphics. I've got a nVidia GX8800 graphics card that should run DX10 and am curious to know what others have experienced, any glitches, etc. Does it have a WOW factor?

It is pretty subtle. The biggest improvement is the water which looks much better. I guess if you like light bloom there is less of a penalty using it. I am finding I run more in dx10 than dx9-there is just something about it that grew on me. The only glitch I have on a 8800gt is the flashing runways.
