If you want to use a button as a "shift" function, just push that button first, keep it pushed and then push another. I use the two right buttons on the yoke as shift buttons. In theory you can use these simultaneous, like ctrl-shift-... on a keyboard but remembering what key combination to use for which function becomes an issue then.
