September 14, 20241 yr Patagonia Part 4 We depart from Villa O'Higgins Airport (SCOH) heading westward, winding our way upward into the Southern Patagonian Ice Field before descending to our first landing at Río Pascua Airfield (SCTP) which serves small settlements along the Pascua River. There is mountainous terrain in all quadrants. The runway is aligned northwest with the lowest terrain routing. This is the first of the shortish (2362 ft) airfields that we will visit on this tour. It is only 16nm to our next landing at Río Bravo Airfield (SCRB) – and another challenging approach featuring terrain and a short field length. Much more of this to come. We follow a dog leg course down the fjord to Enrique Mayer Soto Airport (SCCR) which is concealed from view on the direct course by a prominent hill. Plan your approach carefully as there is water on both ends of the 1895 ft airstrip. The route continues 20nm inland along the Rio Baker to Lago Vargas Airport (SCVS). Then, it is only 14 nm direct route to Ñadis Airport (SCND) – but smart pilots will want to follow one of two river valleys, which while longer, will simplify the approach and landing at the 1921 ft airstrip. We might take a few minutes to regroup and review the next leg waypoints before departing. It is a longish leg that will require an immediate climb to avoid terrain. Work your way up the Laguna Trunco valley and cross a saddle between the peaks. Continue to climb steadily with peaks to your left and right until you finally cross the last mountain pass and the impressive expanse of the North Patagonian Ice Field lies before you. A steep descent to Laguna San Rafael will be needed to setup for the approach and landing at Laguna San Rafael Airport (SCRF). The route continues with longer legs over rugged mountains and fjords with stops at Río Exploradores Airport (SCEX), Quitralco Airport (SCQO), Cabo Juan Roman (SCAS), and finishing at Puerto Cisnes Airport (SCPK). The route is 334 nm and an aircraft capable of 200knts cruise is recommended. I plan to fly the SWS PC-12. Because live weather produces too much snow coverage, I have included the scattered clouds weather theme which we may use if needed in the flightplan zip. Two weather themes which should improve the experience.
