Across the Andes – Reverse

This is a reprise of a flight we made three years ago but in the opposite direction with a few different airports.   We start in San Miguel de Tucumán (SANT) in Argentina.  The route proceeds southwest with multiple stops, crossing several foothill ranges of the Andes until we reach Rodeo (SAQL), our last landing in Argentina.  The route turns northeast and climbs over the main ridge of the Andes and frontier with Chile.  We land at Tres Quebradas Airport (SCTQ) an extremely high elevation (11689 ft) airport serving mining operations in the Atacama Region.  It is only 35nm south to the next high-altitude airport El Indio Airport (SCVC) at 11966 ft.   Turning westward we follow the Rio Turbino valley down to Vicuña and a landing at Huancara (SCVN).  Continuing down river (now named Rio Elqui) to La Serena on the Pacific Coast and a landing at La Florida (SCSE).  We follow the coast 26 miles to the popular resort time of Tongoy.  If time permits, we will continue an additional 43nm into the foothills to Los Tricahues Airport (SCMI).  The pilot's guide has been recycled from the prior flight and POI's discussed are therefore in reverse order.

The route is 556nm with 10 landings (some quite challenging) so we will require an aircraft that has a cruise speed of better than 250kts.  I will be flying the P-38L by Flying Iron. I feel confident that two1530hp turbo supercharged Alison v12’s will help get me out of trouble.  The King Air would also work, and the reverse thrust on landing big bonus.

Just to be clear, the flight starts at 1900 UTC. For Europeans, this is 8pm CET and 7pm GMT. For North Americans who are in the last week of Daylight Savings Time, this is 3pm EDT, 2pm CDT, and 12noon PDT. [And starting next week when North Americans also shift to standard time, the Wednesday/Saturday start will remain at 1900 UTC making it 2pm EST, 1pm CST, and 11am PST.]
