I noticed my topic got moved, and that is fine. But I spent 13 hours on that bad boy, anybody know what are some of the things that would prevent a configured .dds file (by overwriting using "save as"). I used gimp in the past with zero issues by using the method of creating a new layer, merging down, and then overwriting. But working with the aerosoft F16, the texture shows up black. I have tried matching the layer boundary size, and it still shows up black.

Does file size mattter, I see aerosoft uses 1 mb for all of there F-16C_8_T.dds files and mine is larger? I also noticed its not producing a preview image, I dont think that should matter? Lastly, aerosoft uses spec maps via specular.dds for the F-16C_8_T.dds file. I am going to try deleting it and see what happens, since I have no experience with spec maps. Any help would be great, I know the painters are generally the ones still  hanging around these forums.

Is it any of these settings that I need or anything I can do to get it down to 1 mb, is it the file size that is the problem? I know its possible I see plenty of liveries as freeware

All good! I am glad it happened, because I realized I made a few critical user errors. I wisely saved as I went along, and was able to salvage a lot of the original quality. In saying that, the .dds file I was trying to use must have been corrupt, because it refused to be used. But as soon as I used a fresh .dds from the DFW livery, boom, it worked.
