September 10, 2025Sep 10 St Lawrence Estuary This is a continuation for the Gaspe Tour. The St. Lawrence River Estuary, among the deepest and largest estuaries in the world stretches 655 km from west to east, from the outlet of Lake Saint Pierre to Pointe-des-Monts, where it becomes the Gulf of St. Lawrence. We depart from Matane (CYME) heading overwater to Baie-Comeau (CYBC) located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River before crossing back to the south shore and landing at Mont-Joli (CYYY) followed by a short hop to Rimouski (CYXK). Rimouski likely gets its name from a Micmac term for "land of the moose". Founded by Sir René Lepage de Ste-Claire in 1696, its main tourist site is the Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père, featuring exhibits about the RMS Empress of Ireland disaster—where 1,012 lives were lost—and the Pointe-au-Père lighthouse. We continue to crisscross the St Lawrence multiple times landing at Grandes-Bergeronnes (CTH3), Riviere-Du-Loup (CYRI), Charlevoix (CYML), and Montmagny (CSE5) before reaching Quebec City and its POI’s including: Montmorency Falls Park. The 272 feet tall falls are at the mouth of the river where it drops over the cliff shore into the Saint Lawrence River, opposite the western end of the Île d'Orleans. A suspension bridge over the crest of the falls provides access to both sides of the park. Château Frontenac is a historic hotel situated in Old Quebec, within the historic district's Upper Town, on the southern side of Place d'Armes. Designed by New York architect Bruce Price in the Château style and built by the Canadian Pacific Railway company it is considered the most photographed hotel in the world. Quebec City is of the oldest European settlements in North America and the only fortified city north of Mexico whose walls still exist. Quebec Bridge. The Quebec Bridge is a riveted steel truss structure that is 3,238 ft long, and 341 ft high. It is still the longest cantilever bridge span in the world. (It was the all-categories longest span in the world until the Ambassador Bridge was completed in 1929.) It is the easternmost (farthest downstream) complete crossing of the Saint Lawrence River. Pierre-Laporte Bridge. The Pierre Laporte is the longest main span suspension bridge in Canada. It crosses the Saint Lawrence River approximately 660 ft west (upstream) of the Quebec Bridge We land and regroup at Quebec/Lesage Intl (CYQB). For our final leg we leave the St. Lawrence and head west to Saint-Raymond and land at the Saint-Raymond/Paquet Aerodrome (CSK5). Flightplan: HERE Aircraft: I will fly the faster Cessna 404 Titan twin for the early and longer crisscross legs and switch into the Vans RV7 for the Quebec City POI tour and final legs.
