Controlling a instrument panel dimmer

Hi all

I have a macro file to control various switches in my home built cockpit.

The aircraft has a rotating dimmer switch to control light intensity

Does anyone know the best type of switch to use ,potentiometer or rotary encoder

I use rotary encoders for hsi adf and vor but they are continuous in both directions and the light dimmer switch on the panel is not continuous
