Traffic disappearing on Garmin Pilot with XP12

Featured Replies

I’m using Garmin Pilot with XP12 and was running into an issue where all traffic would disappear from the Garmin Pilot display at regular intervals, then reappear about a second later. I asked ChatGPT what might be happening, and it suggested that Garmin Pilot expects to receive traffic data every second. If it doesn’t receive an update within that time window, it assumes the feed has stopped and temporarily removes all traffic from the display.

It turns out this behavior was caused by XP12’s built-in network data output, which appears to not broadcast traffic using proper GDL90 timing or intervals. Because the updates aren’t sent at the steady 1-second rhythm Garmin Pilot expects, the app periodically assumes the feed has stopped, which explains the disappearing traffic.

I found a plugin on the .ORG that solves this by transmitting the player’s traffic once per second and encoding it using correct GDL90 protocol.

XP12’s network data still needs to stay enabled, but once the plugin handles the actual GDL90 output, Garmin Pilot receives traffic smoothly and continuously. It also works with other EFBs.
