I used to have this issue but the fix is actually easy:

Make sure you make a backup of the effect you replace.

The nav lights on my airbus planes are built into the model, so not as straightforward to change.  Renaming the effect files is a good idea.

You can also try using the fx_navgrem.fx and fx_navredm.fx effects as they are a little brighter than the navgre and navred effects (I think the "m" means "medium").  

Once I finish some stuff I'm working on, I may post revised models that use the medium-level nav light effects. 

Question: do you think the strobes are too bright as well?  Thanks.
