Labeling General Aviation Aircraft

Featured Replies

Hi Fellow Simmers--

I just wanted to know, i know how to label airlines at terminal gates but how do I label general aviation aircraft? What are their codes to park? Cessna 172? Hawker 800 Jet? Those are some examples.

If you can help me, it would be appreciated.

In FSX, General Aviation (GA) aircraft are labeled and assigned to parking based on five specific criteria: parking type, aircraft radius (based on wingspan), parking codes, parking area names, and list order.

How the Parking Assignment Works

FSX ranks the availability of a parking spot in a specific priority order. For a GA aircraft to be labeled and directed to a spot, the simulator runs through this checklist:

  1. Parking Types: Spots are categorized (e.g., RAMP for general aviation, or GATE for airliners). GA aircraft are restricted to matching types, primarily labeled as RAMP_GA or simply RAMP.

  2. Parking Radius (Size): FSX checks the aircraft's wingspan and divides it by two. It then matches the aircraft to a ramp spot with a radius that is equal to or larger than this number. If the spot is too small, the plane will be skipped.

  3. Parking Codes: Custom codes can be assigned to specific parking spots in scenery files and to aircraft in their aircraft.cfg file. If a GA aircraft has a specific code (e.g., a specific flight school code), FSX ATC will try to park it at a spot with the matching code.

  4. Parking Areas/Names: ATC will look for identically named parking areas if defined (e.g., "FBO 1" or "Tie-down 3").

  5. List Order: If multiple spots meet all the above criteria, FSX simply assigns the aircraft to the first available spot it scans on its list.

Customizing and Viewing Parking

To see exactly how parking spots are labeled or to customize them, simmers use airport design tools.

  • Aircraft Code Setup: You can view or assign labels to your GA aircraft by opening the aircraft.cfg file and modifying the atc_parking_codes parameter (e.g., atc_parking_codes=GA).

  • Scenery & Label Editing: Users commonly modify the visual and technical parameters of airport parking spaces using community-favorite tools like the Airport Design Editor (ADE), which lets you paint precise GA tie-down spots, set accurate wingspan radii, and label exact parking types.
