coastline and mesh Island problem

Recommended Posts

hi, allI have a strange problem ,i am working on an Island in brittany (france) I work with FsMesh(nice tool) and sdk's tools for textures ;well the texture replace the existing island with no problem, the knew one as you can suppose is more detailed and situated more precisely, this mean that that they are not totaly superposed.when i input the mesh in FS2002 it works fine but it seems to enclosed in original coastline. I mean all the mesh points outside the original shore are not visible. The effect is that the mesh seems to be sometimes cut with a knife.I have tried a lot of thing put water textures first to cover these shores with the fslandclass country pack , it let me just the shore aeras nd doesn't change anything more fore the mesh .I use after that the DEFAERA tool , a nice one which allow you to exclude shore textures , streams ,roads , what you want if you know the layer number of the thing. it works fine , fore shore textures, but do ot solve my mesh problem. The question is: does somebody have encountred and solved this problem? or does omebody can tell me which is the layer of the vector coastline because it seems th point .many thanks for answers Dominique

Hi Dominique. The flattening of the coasts are caused by LWM watermask flattens. The problem of LWM flattens is pretty well documented. There are only 3 solutions.1) You could find and replace the bgl that causes the problem. This would be very hard to do, as you would usually need to replace quite a large area, and all of it's watermasking. If a decompiler became available for this scenery type, it could be used, with knowledge of LWM-BGLC coding, to 'surgically' replace the default BGL's problem area, and then recompile the BGL. Without a decompiler, the entire scope of the BGL would need to be redone from scratch. We are getting some tools that will help with this, but the current tools are really not suited for your use yet.2) You could find the offending BGL and delete it. But you would probably loose all watermasking and coastal corrections for a large area. If you were lucky, deleting the offending BGL would cover just the area you want to change. The file is one of the 'HYP' named BGLs. The file can be rendered inactive, by renaming it's extension from ".bgl" to ".old"..... I do this sort of thing all the time.3) You could try to re-mesh with invisible LWM polygons... an experimental technique that produces a mesh replacement with many LWM flattens. It's a crude method and produces results that many designers would not find acceptable. To use it, you'd need to study LWM-BGLC coding. So to sum up, there is probably little that can be done about your problem at this time, other than deleting ( or renaming the extension ) of the offending BGL. Yes, the flattening can be corrected, but with only a great deal of study and effort, as there is no simple "undo" switch to return mesh to it's unflattened condition.Dick

Hi Dick,This issue is related to a problem I have, but I am not as far along as Dominique.I have created mesh for a Pacific Island, and have a few of the "unnatural cliffs" caused by the low resolution original coastline. However, I can live with those for a while if I must. My question is; Can I make my coastline look better, or am I stuck with the original? Can I use masks to fill in some missing inlets and lagoons? Right now I'd settle for getting my island to look at least a little bit like the real thing. I wish I could get 1/10th of the coastline resolution I see with the tmfview of my mesh bgl.I've been looking over some of the related discussions in this forum, but I'm still at the low end of the learning curve for LWM polygons (thanks for your tutorial, by the way). Right now I'm just trying to figure out what is possible so I can know where to begin.thanks, andy

Hi both Chris (Wright and Wilkes)and allApologize to Chris Wright for this incredible mistake, and thanks to you Chris to point the "mistake", but we where in touch years ago about islands scenery PB, and I just read too a nice paper about your new caribbean scenery in our french simulation magazine, if you consider that I have the head under the sea since weeks wiyh this PB of mesh and coast, I was the ideal target for this mistake ....Chris "wright" please accept my apologize and thanks for your nice software. I hope to find my solution very early.regards for you bothDominique

HI, Yapsee the post from Chris Wright in this forum I am sure we will find our solution in it.I am testing it this afternoon (16h30 france) I will give the result here later.regards Dominique
