How do you add a light in Gmax e.g. on top of a pole?

Featured Replies

Hi, i've been working on a Gmax EGKK tower, which you can see in the screenshots forum. I'm now wanting to add a few lights on the structure, but how does one go about doing so, and also say if i wanted a large light, can this be done by a cluster of lights in a group?P.s got the latest version of Gmax.CheersWill

Hi Will,To get a light you must draw a triangle (draw as line, then make a poly out of it). Then you should give this triangle a material with for example the name light_nav. You will then get a light with the color of the material. Other allowed names (for other types of light) can be found in the MakeMDL SDK. The size of the triangle determines the strenght of the light source. If you want a beam (light_nav) you must make two triangles and link them.Arno

If the world should blow itself up, the last audible voice would be that of an expert saying it can't be done.

I dont think it matters what you draw, the important thing is the material name.In FS it gets transformed to a single light point. You can even use a sphere to simulate a bulb :-)The exception is Bright_light that makes the object light up.

Here is an example.

It's true MakeMDL will make one point out of it. That's why a triangle is the easiest thing, as it is the simplest polygon you can draw :). But if you want you can use any object you want.Arno

Cheers for the replies folks. I like that sample pic, i guess you can actually see the end result like that in gmax, correct?... or do you have to export it into FS?If you haven't already found my work in the screenshots forum, here you are http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/DCForumID47/15466.html .Will

Hi allI've tried creating a light in Gmax with no go :(Any chance of one of you guys (if possible) can give me instructions STEP BY STEP ie. where to go on the screen etc so i can achieve this.Any help will be much appreciatedWill

create an ngon, I use a triangleplace it where u wantplace an "edit mesh" modifier on the modify stackmake a materialapply the materialrename the material to "light_nav" (this order of steps avoids the bug that crashes gmax)go flying! The step of converting the ngon to edit mesh seems to be absolutely needed, yet many folks don't mention it.Good luck,Bob Bernstein
