textures in Nova

Featured Replies

I am going to make scenery for FS using Nova. I would like to make some custom textures for these but have a question. How do you scale the texture for the scenery? Say for instance I know how big the building is going to be. Using Adobe Photoshop, how do I know how big to make the textures? Thanks.tlhorses

For FS you can best use textures that are 128x128, 256x256 or 512x512 pixels. Depending on the shape of your object and how detailed you want the textures to be you might need to make more then one texture for your object.Ussually I choose a certain resolution I want for my object (for example 16 pixels per meter) and then I make the piece of texture for each polygon. I put them all together in a bitmap like the one below. After that I apply the different pieces to the object.http://home.wanadoo.nl/arno.gerretsen/pics/TxText04.jpgArno

Thanks Arno,The 16 pixels per meter was what I was looking for. Again thanks.tk

tk, don't misunderstand Arno's message...he may choose 16m/pixel, and you may like that also, but there is no requirement here...its artistic license, I use many different scales within the same texture so I can optimize the use of space on the texture. If a wall has a sign, for instance, I'll may scale the wall down in resolution to fit the scheme of the texture, but I'll often copy the "sign" onto another section of the texture leaving it at best possible resolution.Hope that makes sense. Yes, Bob is right. The 16 pixels per meter is no rule. For some object I use a higher resolution for others a lower. In general I use higher resolutions for object that you come close to with your aircraft (airport buildings) and lower resolutions for objects you only look at from the sky (so other builings in cities etc).Arno
