Dumb questions regarding the Grand Coulee Dam Area.

Recommended Posts

I have lived a lot of places in the US and several other countries. I think my very favorite was the year and a half I lived in the Grand Coulee Dam Area in Washington State. I left there almost 22 years ago but I would still be there now if the mine I worked for had not shut down.No flight sim has ever done justice to the area but with Eddie Denney's Real Scene 2004 the surrounding area looks really good. But MS did a bad enough job of the immediate area around the dam itself that it still comes out bad. Mind you the model of the actual dam is very good... but it is just plunked down on the scenery and not fit into the scenery as is the Boulder Dam in Nevada.I would like to know if anyone has done a scenery for FS2002 that addresses that area. Failing that can someone point me toward tutorials and/or tools (free or otherwise) with which I might attempt to construct a scenery for the immediate area around the dam?Notice that the dam sticks up out of the surrounding rock? Also that little ditch where the mighty Columbia River should be? And of course no highway bridge or town.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/62584.jpgOn the back side the water should be up near the top, the ends should not be above the surrounding rocks, & we should not be able to see under the dam on the left side. ;-)It should look something like this:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/62585.jpgI don't know how many hundreds of times I drove across that bridge but I was awed each & every time by the view.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/62586.jpgYou can see the proper water level and how the ends fit here.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/62587.jpgI really hated to leave the area... the scenery for miles around was very... hmmm... profound.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/62588.jpgWhen it is spilling the dam is just awesome! That spillway is 300 feet high... the water in the pool below is like a boiling cauldron. I could hear it from where I lived... 2 miles down river... loud but quite pleasant! :)I have zero experience at FS scenery design but I'd like to give it a try if someone would be kind enough to nudge me in the right direction. Of course if someone has already done this... well... so much the better! :-lolBTW: Eddie's mesh & landclass makes FS2004 much more realistic for this old FU2/FU3 lover. I plan to write a review and submit it to AVSIM for consideration. In the mean time I'll say the while I haven't looked at the competition I am very impressed with it.

Hello Tom,Do you have any news on Bob Stiles? I haven't seen him around lately.Anyway, about your question, everything that you desire can easily be done. Try Ground2K4 by Christian Fumey, in the AvSim library.Best regards.Luis

Luis,I just had 3 e-mails from Bob "FlyBert" Stiles. He is doing ok. He has cut the number of forums he is following lately because of how slow the forum system has been running. I am sure you will see him pop up in the ProPilot forum again before long.I downloaded Ground2K4... brought it up to version 5.32 I believe. Now I need to find time to read the documentation.Thank you for the information... much appreciated! :-sun1
