And progress on the Severn

Recommended Posts

The Fretherne scenery set is a highly detailed localised scenery, I guess in some ways its the spiritual successor to ForestFalls, a small beautiful area done in detail, where I can experiment a bit. But whereas ForestFalls was not a great success (too experimental, trying to push FU3 beyond what it could do), this I think is better. Modelling skills have improved, I know the limits a little better, and we now have a great range of models (last time I checked, my models database, zipped, was 93 Mb). It was difficult to find good photos for the region, but the large building around the canal area is the actual building there. The rest is built up from generic shots of villages in the area. Doing the canal boats was fun. My Father in Law had a set of old canal magazines, so I was able to texture them and get the dimensions close to the real thing. The bridge is also the real bridge at that location. I've managed to make it swing open, unfortunately it opens well but closes in a non-realistic way (completes the circle!), and the little bridge shop next to it is the real thing too. The petrol station is shown at night, and you can see the little shop there (a Severn-Eleven I guess).http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155786.jpgSubtle lighting on Jon's socks, blatant lighting on my light cart and the petrol station. Subtle I ain't.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155787.jpgThis is what I like to fly over ...http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155788.jpg... and this is how I like to fly over it. You can see my background inspiration here - Biggles, hedgehopping home ... the plane I prefer for this of course is Captn Bazza's cub. Wonderful to fly because of its high visibility all round, but difficult to land without nosing over. And the Tiger moth is best for outside shots.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155789.jpgCome in, the water's fine. I reclassified the area around here so that land is land, water is water - you can float down the canals or river, and won't splash on landing in the fields.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155790.jpgTypical British weather. But this is where FU3 still performs well.OK, that's it for now. Lots of new stuff but I'm having some troubles working out how to get it uploaded. Christian S is working on the problem and Jon has offered to help. Maybe I could just burn disks for anyone that's interested, if you have UKS installed. Or wait a bit longer until agtim has finished the NASA elevations work, because I'll have to redo all of the UKS scenery packages for that anyway.Robert.
