My first encounter with Bill.......

Featured Replies

.........and on my very first flight too!!!Everything went well........got to my crossing restriction early, and did everything else perfectly. Ok.......on final approach I was told that I am cleared to land. At about 2 miles out, tower told me to go around. I did the go around checklist and started climbing. When the gear went up, the tower said something that I didn't hear....(the dreamfleet "Too low...gear" was really loud)....but I heard him say to contact approach or something. Also the frequency came up on (1). So I hit 1. and called approach. They told me to fly heading 105 (runway heading) and climb to 5000. Passing 2500ft, I decided to ask for a visual approach. The approach controller acknowledged and told me to contact tower. I contacted the tower, who told me I was cleared for the approach and that I was no. 2. At this point, I turned crosswind then downwind.....at about 7miles, I turned to base then final. I asked for a wind check. Then I landed. The tower asked me to taxi off the the runway and contact ground. Ground gave me clearance to the gate. For the flight critique, I was expecting high praise.....instead I was told that I landed after being given a go-around instruction by the controller, and Mr. Stevens took my liscense.....My question is.....why? I asked for a visual, and it was granted. I was told that I am cleared for approach.Anyway, I WANT MY LISCENSE BACK...or the FAA will be hearing from my Lawyers... :-)Lagaz811

Did Tower actually clear you to land the second time? Or just cleared for final?

No.....He cleared me for final but I never received the "cleared to land". So what do I do? I am on final, the tower doesn't say cleared to land. It doesn't say go around either. So I landed........and got stuck with Bill.Lagaz811

Let me try this situation and I'll get back to you.

I wouldn't mind, but the problem is that Bill has this calm voice that is really chilling. BRRRrrrrrrrrrr. And he tricked me into giving him my liscense too!!. LOL...Lagaz.

Lagaz,I'm sorry to report that I flew your example above with no problem. I did a missed approach, then after being handed to APC I requested visual and was told to contact Tower, which I did. I was number 3. Obviously that part is silly, but what the heck!I flew around, and 4 miles out turned for final. At 3 miles Tower cleared me to land. I landed and got no rebuf from Mr. Stevens.Try it again. This time use the "Save Flight" feature of RC before turning to base. Then finish and see if you get yelled at. If you have the same issue, you can always try it again from the saved flight, or send it to me.I...um...spoke to Bill, and he's going to review your case since there was an anomoly in the aircraft. Not your fault. ;-)

If they told you to go around, then cleared you for the visual and then cleared you for final, without saying anything about clearance to land...., in the real world you would pimp the tower for clearance, if you land without specific clearance to land you're wrong, in RC, well, I probably would've called a go-around then tried to get clearance to land again.Just my two pennies.Lobaeux

Thanks for the effort Scott. Dont worry about it. It's probably one of those "one in a million things" that happens sometimes. Its just that I have been looking forward to RCV3 for months now....and I absolutely promised myself that my first flight would be flawless so I was a bit disappointed that I still had to see Bill. But its great that you spoke to him.I seem to remember that in RCV2.0 and 2.2, there was a sort of curve. In other words, you kind of got away with things at first like breaking speed and altitude clearances. However someone (I assume it was JD) gave you a bit of a dressing down and told you to do better next time. After about 7 or 8 flights with mistakes then you had to see Bill. I thought that feature was neat.... However, this curve seems to have been removed in Version 3......now you will need to see Bill after only one mistake!!.Oh well........Anyway, I fully intend to test his (Bill's) patience to the limit in the future...LOL.Lagaz.

Lagaz,If it's any consolation, I virtually paid for Bill's family dinners and put his kid through college for the first year as development and testing was underway.V3 is not as forgiving as V2 because it adheres more closely to the real rules. The deal is not to worry about seeing Bill in the early days, but to NOT see Bill later on. ;-)In any case, don't let it get to you. In the case of gear, more attention needs to be paid to when you drop it now. I STILL can get a go-around for gear on short final, and I stand there arguing with Bill about it all the time. So now I've learned to lower gear earlier and further out. ;-)

Hi Lagaz,Actually I had exactly the same thing happen to me on a recent flight - figured I'd messed up somewhere but if you got it too it seems like something that needs looking at.What got me was that Mr Bill disqualified me for disobeying a Go Around - I didn't, I obeyed the GA then I landed without permission. Can I get my ticket back now :-)All the best,John

Hey John,Sorry to hear that. Bill is really chilly with that calm voice of his. I hope never to have to hear it again.I must admit that I haven't used RCV3 again for a while ....I was waiting for a fix for the slow sound problem. Now that I see one is available, I will try it and do my flight again. I dont expect the same thing to happen though. Remember one thing: Bill means well. He has the safety of everyone else out there at heart. And if he doesn't, then you can't fault a man for doing his job. LOLLagaz.
