December 19, 200520 yr Hi,I made my first flight this week end and had a problem.I messed the the MSA and basically, I was really high and was guided way off the airport to loose altitude. So, I requested a lower altitude, but no figures appeared, only :1.2.3.4.5.I typed one of the numbers and the controller told me I was cleared to.... without saying the actual altitude.I did this is the approach phase, when ATC guided me toward the airport, maybe this is why, are we supposed to make any altitude requests at that stage ? If so, maybe the option should not be available ?I hope I made myself clear,ThanksOlivier
December 19, 200520 yr Hi Olivier,As far as I remember you are not allowed to request altitudes below the msa. That's why they were blank. Also if you have a high msa you would get vectored a long way from the airport not to lose height but to make sure we don't vector you into a hillside. We vector you so you don't need to descend below the msa until you are on the final approach heading. All the best,John
December 19, 200520 yr Hi John,Thanks for your quick response ; I thought that you were not allowed to ask for lower altitude, I was surprised that the option is available (even if it is blank). It is no big deal though,ThanksOlivier
