It may be a "power issue"

In Win 7 you need to set up the power options very carefully making sure that the power is always on, and that on "idle" you do not switch off the USB Ports and Hubs. Under Power options choose 'High Performance' then go to 'change advance power settings choose USB settings and make sure that the USB suspend setting is disabled. Also in Device Manager check every USB Hub etc and under Power options ensure that 'Allow the computer to turn off this device" is unticked.

If that doesn't work then it could be hardware related.

Thanks for the help Peter. I will make the changes and monitor my system for operation. I had two USB Root Hubs that were ticked, so I unticked them....

  2. So you are running under the default location without any issues?

Absolutely! All except for the fact I cannot afford ALL the payware I want!!!

However, they say installing FS into the Windows 7 Program Files (x86) folders causes problems with any FS working properly as there are just too many security features built into Windows 7. Personally, I turn off User Access Controls (UAC) whenever installing any new software and have never had a problem. (Any anti-virus program should be disabled too whenever installing new software). But, if you don't have UAC turned off you may have to make sure FS9 or FSX is ran as an "Administrator".

I have had "0" install issues with Win 7 64-bit, except add on scenery issue. That has been discussed elsewhere here on the forum. I have not had to disable UAC.

  3. Brandon,

Just finished building my new system and it is powerful and quite without overclocking, and my FSX sliders are maxed!!! I can overclock this system but why??? I get fabulous performance with this set up. Check my signature for the recipe of parts I used and look them up on your favorite reseller (mine is NewEgg). Don't wait for Ivy Bridge. If you do decide to upgrade to Ivy Bridge in the future, this motherboard will take that chip!

  4. My issue has been that my computer would not wake from sleep. After pressing the sleep button I would get a double boot action but would not continue to GUI. I would have to press reset button at least twice to get it to boot up. I would get the screen choice to 'repair the OS' or 'delete configuration and continue to OS'. I would choose the later and computer would boot to OS.

This morning I went into BIOS and reset all configurations to default and will see what this system does over the weekend.

BIOS version is the latest on this POS P8Z68-V Gen3. It is not overclocked at this point, either.

  5. I'm looking at either the i5-2500k or the i7-2600k - I intend to overclock (got a Corsair H80 noise beast currently and the fittings for an Intel board)What do you people recommend as a processor to run FSX? The system is mainly used for FSX so that's the main consideration. A little other gaming but that's rare these days.
I have been quite happy with my new unit, and did NOT have to overclock to get GREAT performance from almost maxed out sliders in FSX. I do max out my sliders in FS9 though. See my signature for the recipe. And by all means, do not wait for Ivy Bridge technology. It will be premium priced when it first hits the market and you don't really need it for FSX. You can overclock if you want to, to achieve some sort of overclock parameters, but not necessary to boost current hardware to achieve FSX/FS9 nirvana...

  6. The CPUs come with a thin layer of pre-applied thermal grease
My Intel i5-2500K did not have any thermal paste applied to it but the cooling fan included with the CPU did have a pre-applied patch of some thermal compound on it that transferred to the CPU when the fan was mated to it and the motherboard. You would also get some thermal past provided with most aftermarket coolers.I have read that the Arctic Silver 5 is the best around at this stage.

  7. I was of the understanding that positive pressure provides better cooling and minimizes dust buildup inside the case if you have filters on all the intake fans.
Lots of opinions in both negative and positive case pressure camps hereIMHO I would opt for the negative pressure insuring positive airflow through the case, and clean out any excessive dust buildup over time.

  8. This is what I call a great looking case (what I like nowdays):http://www.lian-li.c...=25&ss_index=61
I am not impressed with this case 'thermal efficiency' Two larger fans pulling in cooling air with only two smaller fans pushing out heated air still spells 'positive pressure' inside the case causing stagnating hot air lurking inside. Ideally you want a negative airspace inside for efficient airflow management with no hot spots in corners. The addition of the PSU cannot be considered because its' fan, if and when it is operating needs to be managing its' own heat issues. If the the two 120mm fans have to run at higher RPM to move the CFM from the front two 140mm fans then your having to use more energy and possibly higher noise levels as well to get that hot air out. An external liquid cooling system may be the only cure for this case for an efficient FSX OC system. IMHO of course...

  9. Fabian,I am putting together a new FSX system as well and after exhaustive research I found that an Intel CPU based system will outperform and AMD system by a long shot. As you read the posts of many that are in this forum and the different mixes of their systems (in their signatures) you will see this as well. Read my recipe in my signature as a guide.Good luck with your build in any case.

  10. Slowly will begin to assemble a new PC.Need to begin with the case. I guess I will need 5 hard drives and a DVD drive. One or two USBs on the front, 1 audio on the front. Size does not matter - the larger the better. I have no desire to sit and look at LEDs in the case, interior lighting is a waste for me. I already have a 700w power supply. Cooling and cabling would be the prime areas of interest.
nudata, did you decide on a case yet? I got my Antec P183 V3 case in and it looks sweet on the inside and out, but more important, the cable routing and separate compartment for the PSU makes the heat management simpler and quieter. There is a great review of this case at SPCR. I cut the metal fan hub 'Star' out with a large pair of dikes and that will eliminate airflow impedance and the noise described in the review. I also installed two Antec TrueQuiet 120 fans in the front two lower bays to pull in fresh cooler air for the PSU and the upper chamber. I plan to mount any HDD's in the lower chamber and cool them with the same air that gets to the PSU.

  11. @ cmeeks: The PSU was recommended by silentpreview.com because of its quiet nature, it is the 80 Plus Gold Series . I used this site for much of my quest for silent operating hardware guidance. Although I could have used a smaller PSU, this one specifically was noted for its quietness and I needed 650 watt minimum with current configuration anyway. I won't be using the Hobart welder out in the shop as often now (grin)...@SpiritFlyer: Thanks for the encouragement. How it looks assembled will be a little interesting inside that black box, but I am hoping it performs the optimum FSX immersion miracle!!

  12. In my new build I researched for and opted for as efficient, quiet and heat transfer capabilities case as I could find. I chose the Antec Performance One Series P183 V3 Black Aluminum / Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer CaseWhat I liked best was the bottom mount PSU inside of its own cooling chamber. It is isolated from all the other components and therefore does not contribute to the heat generated by the modo or video components. Besides, the bigger the case, the more volume of air you need to move to keep it all air cooled (liquid too, for that matter). My new build choices:1 x ($244.99) EVGA SuperClocked 02G-P3-1469-KR GeForce GTX 560 (Fermi) 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card1 x ($224.99) Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 3000 BX80623I52500K1 x ($219.99) SeaSonic X-SERIES X-1050 1050W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply1 x ($204.99) ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS1 x ($139.99) Antec Performance One Series P183 V3 Black Aluminum / Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case1 x ($107.99) Seagate SV35 Series ST3500411SV 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -1 x ($99.99) Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM1 x ($69.99) Prolimatech PRO-MGH-C Megahalems Revision C CPU Cooler1 x ($59.99) Mushkin Enhanced Redline 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model 9969811 x ($12.99) EVERCOOL F-EC12025H12BP 120x120x25mm High Speed Double Ball Bearing Fan I have a couple of Antec TrueQuiet 120 120mm Case Fan to use in the front of the case on back order. You may want to reconsider replacing your PSU as well depending on your overall power requirements at 'ramming speed' or full operating speed of your connected components in this new build. I found this calculator to be of great interest and guidance when I selected my PSU. My choice may have a bit of overkill, but I chose it for the silent running capabilities as well.http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jspDon

  13. That board does NOT support PCIe3. Go for the P8Z68 Deluxe Gen3.
What would my advantage be if I were using the EVGA Superclocked GeForce GTX560 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Video Card? It is only PCI Express 2.0 x16.Thanks

  14. The best performance per dollar is undoubtably the i5 2500K which when o/c it is nearly on a par with any of the i7's, couple that with a good z68 ver 3 mobo (which may support PCIE3), a 5xx series Geforce card, 8GB RAM, 64-bit OS and you have a good system.
I am pretty well convinced of this setup too for MY next build (SOON!) and consider waiting for the next hardware event (Ivy Bridge) to be a non-issue. FSX is not going to have any more input by Microsoft (performance improvements, is: patches). What hardware is available now will run FSX at high performance slider settings and high FPS so that is where I am going with my hardware selections.Antec Performance One Series P183 V3 ATX Mid Tower CaseASUS P8P^& Deluxe Intel MBIntel Core i5-2500K SB 3.3GHz ChipPolimatrich PRO Megahalems Rev. 15. My favorite plane has always been the P51 with the four cannon (after the A36 of course), but I could make do with the Warbirdsim P51B & Cs if I knew they worked with FSX with only rudimentary modifications. Has any bought any of their packages and tried it yet?
Yes, the Warbirdsim P-51 aircraft work quite well in FSX.Fragmentum
