  1. i've been looking at ASX and XG and it looks like a pretty impressive combination. i'm very interested in purchasing the bundle, so i've been reading the documentation on the hifi website (very nice site, btw).before i go ahead and purchase this, i just wanna understand exactly how this works, as some things were not clear to me in the documentation...1) ASX needs to be running behind FSX, correct? when do you apply the weather? during the flight planning screen? or do you have to actually load a flight first (i.e. be in the cockpit)?2) i understand that XG works in conjunction with ASX, where the appropriate XG textures are chosen based on the weather. but say i decide to just jump right into FSX with no weather or anything. are the XG textures that were previously installed by ASX still in effect?i apologize if these questions had been answered elsewhere. thanks for the help.
  2. well, i'm finally making the leap. my aging P4 has been struggling to keep up with the latest and greatest applications. so i ordered a bunch of parts, which should be here early next week. here are the specs...Q6600 Core 2 Quad CPUASUS P5N-E SLI Motherboard4GB DDR2800 RAM8800GT 512MB500GB SATA HDD (for Vista 32-bit)320GB SATA HDD (for XP 32-bit)i've failed to keep up with computer technology the past few years, so i've been doing a lot of catch-up reading. i'm also trying to prepare for all the OS/software installations i'm gonna have to do. but i just have a few questions...1) as you can see, i'm planning on doing a dual boot setup. i've read that you have to install XP first, then Vista. is this correct?2) i've also read that when installing both OS's, only put 2GB of RAM (at most) in first. then once both OS's are installed, go back and install the rest of the RAM. is this correct?3) i ordered a Vista install disc that includes SP1. does anyone know if this includes SATA drivers for the installation process? or will i need separate drivers on a USB drive/floppy/etc.?4) is there anything else i should be aware of before setting this thing up?thanks for the help.
  3. actually, i got an extra approach book for NoCal or SoCal, as well. no approach book for atlanta, though, since it isn't a "full kit" like the other ones.
  4. no hit on FPS as far as i can tell. i use various add-on airports from flytampa, imaginesim, and simflyers and maintain about 15-18 FPS on the ground, which is the same as before. i fly mostly in the PMDG 737 and LDS767. i keep my frames locked at 25 and once airborne, FPS maintains a steady 24-25 FPS.like i said before, when initally loading a flight (with the little splash screen and loading status bar), it takes a little while longer to load the textures. but even if i'm flying and approaching an area covered by megascenery, i haven't experienced any stutters or FPS hits either.
  5. hey everyone... just thought i would post a few quick screenshots :)these are from the Southern California area, just after departing KLAX...http://www.fszone.org/imgs/863/megascenery01.jpghttp://www.fszone.org/imgs/863/megascenery02.jpghttp://www.fszone.org/imgs/863/megascenery03.jpg
  6. Chuck-- there is a misalignment with my setup, as can be seen in the videos i posted. but, it doesn't bother me for some reason. actually, i think the black spaces on the sides after alignment would bother me more. HA! go figure... anyway, when playing games, most of your focus is on the center monitor, at least that's what i've found. in reality, that makes sense. if you're walking down the street, the natural thing to do is look in front of you. basically, if something within your peripheral vision catches your attention, then you look that way. it's kinda the same in relation to FS. a lot of times, i'm focusing on instruments which are right in front of me. i'll look to the left or right for traffic and sightseeing. of course, TrackIR helps too in getting things into focus where you want. buy the Triplehead2Go :)as far as different size monitors, i believe there was a review written on SimHQ and the author used different size monitors...yep, here it is...http://www.simhq.com/_technology/technology_065j.htmlthere's a picture there that might give you an idea what different size monitors will do for you. browse through the rest of the review and i think there are more pictures, too.
  7. hey Chuck-- it's the analog version. i would have liked to get the digital version, but it was a present and i wasn't about to turn it down! apparently, most places are out of stock of the digital version anyway.i don't really fly in 2D that much since i like to use my TrackIR. but i occasionally do like to bring up the 2D panels to make things easier. you are correct in saying that the panels are stretched out, but the easiest way to fix them is to just resize them within FS. for instance, when flying the LDS767, i like to bring up the 2D overhead panel. when i hit Shift+5 to bring it up, it's stretched out across the screen. all you have to do is find the left or right border and click and drag it to resize it. then, if i close it and bring it back up again, it's already resized the way i want it.i believe there's a way to do this in the panel.cfg files, but i'm not sure how.as for what to do with your 2nd pc, i say turn it into a Media Center PC. that's what i did and i don't regret it one bit. i haven't watched a commercial in god knows how long! :)
  8. i'd been using TrackIR and a dual monitor setup for a while. one monitor was used for the VC view, and the other was used for panels, gauges, etc. but recently, my fiancee got me a third monitor for my birthday, and my parents got me the TH2GO. i can't even begin to express how much the expanded field of view changes everything. plus, the added degrees of freedom that the TrackIR gives makes it even better.the monitors i have are actually three different models. ideally, i guess it would be good to have three of the same exact monitors, but not absolutely necessary. at the very least, you should get three monitors of the same size, which is what i have (3 x 19" widescreens). obviously, the bezels do get in the way and obstruct the total field of view. but i find that once i'm flying, this isn't an issue as i become so immersed in what's going on.i was afraid at first that the larger resolution would bog things down, but really i haven't noticed any reduction in FPS. i have it locked at 25 FPS and with default aircraft at default airports, it maxes out. with an aircraft such as the LDS767 at an add-on airport like ImagineSim's KCVG, i still get anywhere between 15 to 18 FPS on the ground. of course, once in the air, it steadily increases and maxes out during cruise.the only problem i ran into was that the TH2GO does not play nicely with ATI cards. i was using an X1950PRO AGP card, but i picked up an eVGA 7800GS CO for pretty cheap and run FS2004 at a resolution of 3840x768. i can't tell you how it performs with FSX since my computer is aging pretty fast.if anyone would like to see how this setup works, i shot a couple of videos that you can view here:http://virtualskies.ulmb.com/th2go.htmand just as a reference, here are my computer specs:Asus P4P800SE MotherboardIntel Pentium 4 CPU [3.0GHz (OC
  9. well, i got this stuff in the mail yesterday. here's an excerpt from what i wrote on my site...------------------------------------------i ordered on monday and it was delivered yesterday. i gotta say that the box was surprisingly heavy. but i guess it should be since each full kit includes approach charts and area maps.installation was a breeze, although it took a couple hours. total size for the complete installation of all five scenery packages amounted to approximately 20GB. so you can imagine why it took so long.once installed, i was eager to check out the new surroundings. i started out at Van Nuys (KVNY) in a Cessna 172. initial loading took so long that i thought my computer had froze. but it just turns out that it actually takes that long to load the new textures. that part was kind of disappointing, but once you get going, it
  10. I don't know if this was posted elsewhere, so I apologize if it was.PC Aviator is running a 5-pack bundle sale for their Megascenery line of products. I'd always wanted to give them a go, but prices add up and I didn't want to spend that much for all the areas I wanted to cover. After checking their site recently, I discovered that the following are being packaged together:Northern California V2Southern California V2Pacific NorthwestMid-AtlanticAtlantaThe price for all this is $35.95 + shipping. They're all the full versions, so I jumped on it right away, considering one of these normally goes for about $30. So it's a pretty good deal.Anyway, here's the link...http://www.pcaviator.com/shop/viewAProduct.php?pid=777
  11. oops... sorry, double post
  12. actually, here's a link to a better version of the video...http://virtualskies.ulmb.com/th2go.htm
  13. i started a thread last week inquiring about the TH2GO. and well, i finally got my hands on one. it's pretty awesome. three monitors makes the experience that much better. it takes a little getting used to, though.anyway, here's a short video of the new setup in action:http://www.fszone.org/videos/displayimage.php?pid=823unfortunately, the X1950PRO that i had just bought a few months ago was no good since the TH2GO doesn't work too well with ATI cards. so i replaced it with a 7800GS to get a higher resolution. right now, i'm running FS9 at 3840x768 (that's triple 1280x768) to get a good widescreen aspect ratio for my 19" widesceen monitors. it's not running at native resolution, but it sure as h3ll looks good enough to me. :)i haven't noticed a huge drop in FPS, maybe about 2 to 3 from what i was seeing before. so i'm quite happy with the performance. but i did rebuild the .cfg file, so i'm gonna have to go through and tweak it again.here are just a few more pics...the new card:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/176748.jpgTriplehead2Go:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/176750.jpgthe flight deck :):http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/176749.jpg
  14. Paco, here are a couple links that describe the TH2GO and their resolutions. keep in mind, there are two version of the TH2GO out right now: analog and digital.analog:http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/gxm/prod.../th2go/home.phpdigital:http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/gxm/prod...igital/home.phpbasically, the highest resolution you can get is 3840x1024 (triple 1280x1024). but nVidia cards seem to be the only ones that seem to support this. basically, if you have an ATI card, the best you can do is 2400x600 (triple 800x600). but i hear that the new ATI 29xx series cards support the higher resolutions. in my case, i ended up switching to an nVidia card just to use the TH2GO after being a long time ATI user.
