  1. Downloaded the free version the other day. Flew the first flight as that allows one to get into the other planes and areas. So far the issue I have is my CH Flight Sim yoke controler. Still trying to modify the default settings of what the game offers. Seems there should be a little more options as the throtle lever control only has one setting "Y axsis" for either idle or full throtle.

  2. HI Iain,I can view the main C: on both computers. What allowed me to view on both was to right click on the main C: and then under Advanced Sharing checked the box 'share this folder', then clicked the Permissions button, The 'Everyone' was there under Group or user names, highlighted Everyone and checked the boxes Full Control, Change and Read then clicked OK. Sometimes you might get a warning message that you can't share certain files or folders but after closing all the open windows I used for Advanced Sharing the drives were there? Also sometimes had to "take ownership" of the folders I wanted to share. I have the utility Ultimate Windows Tweaker from Microsoft for Windows 7 http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultimate-windows-tweaker-v2-a-tweak-ui-for-windows-7-vista and one of the settings has "take ownership." One other tweak I liked was the ability to hide the arrows on the shortcut icons on the desktop. That was previously offered under Windows XP Ultimate Tweaker utility.

  3. When closing a flight from any of the Briefing Time paint jobs and using end flight button in FSX the FSX screen moves to the bottom right of the screen and unable to close FSX unless using Task Manger, End Task. Installed the FSX Basic Compatibility Update also. After using Task Manager, End Task, Windows looks for a problem and reopens FSX and can close FSX normally. OS Windows 7 64 professional. No other aircraft causes this issue when closing a flight.

  4. I've finally decided to replace my sandy bridge mobo with a new revision one because of the cougar point issue. Is there any specific thing I should do. For example, do I need to uninstall the drivers for the old one before taking it out. Also, should I uninstall windows or would it be find if I simply took the old one out, put the new one in, and install drivers for the new one?
No need to install drivers before replacing mobo. The new mobo usually come with a disc that contains the needed drivers. If the drivers are signed by Microsoft the drivers may install upon installation of Windows.jrocky

  5. I have just re-installed Win 7 (new mobo), and have just started going through Nick's Win 7 optimization. I am about to install FSX onto a separate drive to the OS, but cannot see the command to create a new folder (the Win7 help says to right click and then select "new), but "new" doesn't feature in the right click list, for this or any other drive). the FSX install menu doesn't include a "new folder" item, and anyway I would like to be able to create one regardless of FSX. I am logged in as Administrator. I have not activated Win 7 yet, if that is the issue. In my prior instance of this OS there were several ways to create a new folder, including an item on the menu bar in "Computer". Any help much appreciated. Seems a dumb question, like "how do I turn the PC on". !! Thanks, Bruce.
Bruce,Click the folder icon with the blue 'clip' on the left side of the task bar. Then scroll down to 'C' for instance. Highlight 'C' then right click, on the new menu there should be 'New' then hover your mouse pointer and then slide mouse pointer over to 'Folder'.jrocky

  6. It sounds like Disk 4 is dirty and maybe has greasy fingerprints on it. Try cleaning it with a kleenex and try again. There is no other reason why the installation would stop as you stated. Just remove the CD, clean it, then reinsert it if it happens again. Best regards,Jim
Jim,Kleenex or other tissue is not a great way to clean CD or DVD disks or monitor screens. Use a damp lint free cloth such as a old T-shirt and then dry with same type cloth. If grease is on the disk wash the disk in a few drops of dish detergent and water with lint free cloth and dry with same.

  7. Installed Internet Explorer 9 beta :(, what a mistake! One issue was that when viewing the Kneeboard in FSX the window was blank. Pressing any of the buttons like Keys configuration rendered no text display. Also some of the graphics appeared washed out. Luckily was able to return back to IE8. FSX seems to be back to normal. :( Understand that IE8 beta had similar issues which were fixed later. Use Internet Explorer rarely, I have been using Mozilla browsers for quite a few years as my default browser. :(

  8. XP Pro presently meets all of my needs and thanks to Nick's advice runs FSX and FS9 just great on my system. So far I have detected no practical reason for me to personally upgrade. However, it looks like Microsoft is encouraging me to continue OS upgrades regardless of my personal preferences. In the process of successfully troubleshooting my daughter's computer and going to Microsoft.com for suggestions, I found the following link which tells me that support for XP ended last month:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/end-support-windows-xp-sp2-windows-vista-without-service-packs?os=xpI still am a bit confused. If I am interpreting correctly after more extensive reading, automatic updates will continue by MS (How long I don't know). I have received some updates since the expiration date for support indicated by the referenced end date in the link.Wonder what OS will be next from MS and how long it will be? I may procrastinate (One of my God given talents), bypass the I7 OS and wait for the next MS learning curve headache as long as I can get away with it. Respectfully:RTH
End of support is for those who have NOT updated to the most recent service packs - SP 3 for Windows XP is the most recent. Have read that Windows XP will be supported until 2014. Not sure about how long VISTA will be supported. View the above link provided by the originator of this post.

  9. I know this subject has been discussed in the past and I have avoided installing Adobe Air in the computer I use for slimming. However Firefox and other apps are constantly telling me to update and I was wondering if the original problems that occured with Adobe Air are still valid or is it deemed safe to now go ahead with the install. If I decide to proceed and problems occur I won't blame anyone for their advice so please feel free to reply. Oh, and Happy 4th of July to all in the U.S. Echofox U.K.

I removed Adobe Air could see no use for having it. There were issues with Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Reader, those have been updated to solve issues.

  10. eWith the win 7-64 bit program , I have SP 1 and2............and I read somewhere that I also need FSX Accellerator (sp?)........for certain scenery programs...............Is this true??.........and where do I got this add-on?...........thanks, B42L8
Acceleration adds some enhancement features. Flight Sim X-Gold is the package that has Acceleration with SP1 and SP2 included. The SP2 that comes with Flight Sim X-Gold is a later edition, so you would overwrite the SP2 you downloaded or delete SP2 before installing Flight Sim X-Gold. Microsoft is currently making more copies of FSX for retail. Might check Amazon.com for Flight Sim X-Gold, there are some new editions available at the store.

  11. Several more questions if anyone's reading this thread:After installing Win 7 (and having lost WinXP 32 OS due to requirement to "custom install"), is it possible to install WinXP 32 on another drive and multi-boot to it (for the apps that are 32 bit only that I want to still access)? And, with XP I only have the option of DX9C (Direct X). I understand that Win 7 (64) provides DX10 and maybe even DX11. Which is best to run FSX with? I recall an issue with Vista (which I have never used) that DX10 was an issue with FSX, if I recall correctly....Thanks, Bruce.
Bruce,If you installed Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate there is a optional update for installing Windows XP on a Virtural PC: Windows XP Virtual PC install Tried the Virtual PC, however was not able to run the sound card as a Windows XP device as the drivers were updated for Windows 7 64 bit that were installed.

  12. I finally added Windows 7 to my roster after, what, eight years using XP. A new Asus top-of-the-line laptop for designing when I am traveling (oh, and do a little simmin' on it too!). So coming from XP there is a bit of a learning curve as to where things are located now and how to get from A-to-B, etc.It seams Win7 is really good once you have a program up as far as finding files, seeing pages open and the like. My question is first opening a program. I know... sound very elementary but what I mean is I see only two ways to open a program:1. From an icon on your desktop (not practical to have all my programs as icons)2. From the Start Menu under the All Programs roll-out which again seems not practical try to find a program. In XP I could create custom Toolbars with programs in groups I want or it had the "Quickstart"(?) area where I could drag the icons of my most used programs. Both of those options appear to be gone with Win7.So what are you guys using? Say yo want to have a group of your favorite flightsim programs?Clutch
Clutch,Yes Windows 7 is quite different from Windows XP. Somewhat like Windows Vista which I never purchased. You mention "Quickstart". Windows 7 has what is called a "Jump list" and those are at the top of all program listings when clicking the Start button. Also can send programs to the desktop as a Shortcut by right clicking the program in the Start menu then select Send To, click Desktop (Create shortcut). Once the icon is on the Desktop you can drag it to the taskbar and select "Pin to Taskbar" where it will remain on the left side of the Taskbar. Not sure about creating a folder as a icon and then using pin to taskbar option, maybe that would work too??jrocky

  13. Jrocky, no luck mate. Just a bit more info. When I try and navigate to the user/appdata/ folder it doesn't seem to be there. I'm positive I change the folders so they were'nt hidden.Dave.
Dave,See Opa's post on installing FS9 and FSX in Windows 7: FS9 and FSX installThough Opa's relates to Home Premium the same procedure should also work for any Windows 7 installs. Jrocky

  14. Just installed FS9 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 and when I try and start it I keep getting this warning. Has anyone had this happen.Dave .
Dave,Try this. Download Ultimate Windows Tweaker: Ultimate Windows Tweaker Once installed, Navigate to 'Additional Tweaks', under Useful Context menu for Drives and Folders, select and place check in Show "Take Ownership" also check Show "Take Ownership under Files only". Then close Ultimate Window Tweaker, navigate to where FS9 was installed by viewing the folder from Computer/C:Users/ ....ect. Right click on the folder, on the menu select 'Take Ownership'. Once you take ownership right click on the folder itself, then Properties, Security tab, Advanced button, Permissions tab. If Deny is showing for any user, click Change Permissions button. Then highlight the Denied user and right click, then click Edit tab, place check mark in the Allow boxes (all boxes checked), Apply button then Click OK on all those open views. Another reason I use Ultimate Windows Tweaker is to remove those stupid shortcut arrows on desktop icons that were created when placing the shortcut icon on the desktop. There are some other tweaks, view and check any that might apply. My FS9 is in C:/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Games and I did not have any problems running FS9 first time.Note: Do A System Restore Point before doing the above. jrocky

  15. I am having a lot of trouble trying to figure out what I have been doing wrong here. I have downloaded a Windows 7 (x64) ISO from Microsoft, twice. Burned them into a blank DVD once in Mac and the other time in a PC and none of them worked. Then I lost my patience and asked in my college so they would burn the DVD to me properly (it's not piracy, my college provides the burned ISO and then a original serial number for each student). The thing is, after Boot Camp has sucessfully created a Windows partition, I insert the DVD (third time with another different DVD) and Star installation. The Mac is rebooted and freezes in a blank (white) screen for several minutes. I need then to reboot myself and restart pressing Alt to boot in Mac OS X. I don't think is a media problem any longer, so I beg someone to help me.
Possibly the Windows 7 ISO file you downloaded from Microsoft was a Release Candidate? The Release Candidate expires June 1, 2010 and users running the current RC will experience shut down every two hours Starting March 1, 2010. You will need to purchase Windows 7 from Microsoft or a commercial retailer. Windows 7 Release Candidate

  16. When pressing Esc, when wanting to exit flight the screen freezes and the screen that should show 'do you want to quit FSX' menu moves to the lower right corner of the screen, and no selection button to quit FSX shows, just the outline of menu screen shows. Need to start Task Manager and then select End Task. Then a message dialog, 'there has been a fatal error in FSX, searching for a solution'. No other message dialog appears after searching for solution, then the FSX menu screen loads and then can quit from there. All other planes in FSX work and no screen freeze or other errors quitting FSX. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. Installed the FSX patch for B-25 'Briefing Time' and moved folder as documented. As a note for those programs that were built with 32 bit Windows, those on 64 bit Windows now are located in C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X

  17. As I am waiting "patiently" on my newly purchased computer, I want to start preparing myself on to best take care of my new system, when it arrives. Now I have used a lot of anti virus programs in the past, but now I have no clue what is best. You see I now learn that threats to your operating system comes from websites in form of spywar, adware and so on.So please help me out here, because it is a jungle, and I simply want to know which one to choose.I need a program that is good, but not intrussive on my everyday PC operations.Thank you all.Boaz Fraizer
Boaz,I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials since install of Windows 7, it is free and works in the background. Microsoft Security Essentials
