16 minutes ago, Ray Proudfoot said:@europrodave, with a 750w PSU you might be better with an 850w minimum but preferably 1000w.
Thank you Ray. I failed to mention I was upgrading my 850w to a 1000w. My specs are a little out of date. Good catch.

Hey all.
I thinking about pulling the trigger on a new GPU for P3D and soon to install MSFS.
I’m thinking of the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 4090 OC Edition Gaming 24GBAny concerns you can think of? Any positive experiences with this card?
Thanks in advance

It was my alternate choice had I not gotten the TUF 4090. I'm using a Corsair 5000D case and it fits just fine in it.
Thanks Jason.
I have done the measurements and I’ll be fine with my Corsair 750D High Airflow too. -
5 hours ago, Bob Scott said:One criteria that might influence your choice is size. I also ended up with the ASUS TUF 4090, and it's positively HUGE--so big (long), in fact, that I couldn't fit it into my full-sized HAF-X tower and had to buy a new monster-sized case.
The positioning of the power connector might be an issue with some computer cases, as well--particularly if the case is narrow or has side-mounted case fan(s) that protrude into the case. You need a good 2-3 inches of headroom between the top of the card and the side of the case to make the heavy cable bend from the top of the GPU down towards the PSU.
Thank you Bob for your insight. I'll need to check on my case size to confirm it will fit.

Hello all.
I'm not very clever when it comes to differentiating why one particular 4090 GPU is better for a SIM than another one? I also see a fair difference in price.
I am running P3Dv5 currently and will be getting MSFS once the good heavy's become available in that SIM. With that being said, might you please steer me in the direction regarding modal and specific 4090 I should be looking at? And why?
Thank you in advance.

Good evening.
I haven't been able to complete a flight in the last 4 attempts. I captured the AppCrash but don't know how to read it to give me the reason both why and how to repair.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Good day Chaps.
Reaching out to you all who are a lot more clever than I to ask if upgrading to a EVGA 3080 TI FTW will be a noticeable upgrade from my current 2070?
Thanks for your input in advance.

It is rockstable even with heavy use (encoding video for 24 hours is painless but for MSFS it is not. Sofar I have nearly 160 CTD's logged for MSFS and have spend weeks troubleshooting. It looks like it could be USB related but sometimes MSFS crashes even with only keyboard and mouse connected.
I am nearly done with this system. Have tried most if not all suggestions on severa fora, disabled PBO entirely, switched back to PCIe 3.0, different bioses, drivers, videocards etc. but it keeps CTD'ing, but only with MSFS. Reinstalling MSFS and even Windows did not help either. Memory checks out OK.
I have built several systems myself but mostly Intel systems. My last AMD build was 15 years ago and it gave me headaches. I hoped it would be different this time around...
I have no guarantee though that spending money on a new Intel built will solve my issues but I am out of options. With 90% of my flights ending in a CTD and after months of troubleshooting I am quite out of patience.
Right now I am nearly at the point of buying Intel now, or wait for Alderlake and stop flightsimming in the mean time. I could also go back to FSX off course, but I haven't tried it on this AMD built yet and it seems like going backwards.Wow!! How frustrating.

2 hours ago, orchestra_nl said:Any particular reason why you didn't go for its predecessor, the Hero XII?
I am asking this because I am contemplating the Hero XII for my move (back) to Intel and am wondering if the newer Hero XIII is worth the higher price for a 10900k CPU, since some upgrades like the 4th Nvme slot and PCIe 4.0 are just for the 11900k CPU.I wanted to however, where I live, it was actually less expensive to get the XIII than the XII. Even on line. I probably could have eventually bought the XII but I would have had to jump through too many hoops to do so.

Yeah. Me too. I just need to jump through a few hoops to get it here to Nova Scotia. Silly company won’t ship out of Province so I’m going to get a mate in Ontario pick it up for me and ship it he can ship it.
I’m in no rush to compromise on components.
Thanks Martin. -

Ambient temp definately makes a diference. Your 70's would have been 60's with an ambient 10 degrees lower.
Depends if overclocking too of course.
Happy Monday Martin.
This question has nothing to do with cooling.
Thank you for all your guidance on the forum helping me with my new parts.
I’m having a challenge getting a hold of a ASUS z490 Hero here in Canada.
I can get the AORUS equivalent z490 Master but, don’t have any knowledge on it.
Do you know of this board and did it would be a solid option for my build? Thanks in advance and enjoy your day.

Sorry, that figure was included a GPU water block and loop as well. All EK stuff.

7 hours ago, martin-w said:Depends how you define upper limits.
As confirmed already in this thread. Even all cores at 5 GHz would be only 67 to 77 according to reviews. Stock Turbo's lower on most of the cores so would be even lower temp. Under 80 degrees is fine for everyday use.
lxoye told us he sees 65 degrees running the sim. And that's with MSE on, so not stock. Obviously depends on your ambient temp too.
Personally I have no interest in running the 10900K with an overclock. Intel pretty much pre overclocked it anyway to compete with AMD. I don't see any significant benefit from a few hundred megahertz more.
So, you build a custom loop, and manage to clock all cores to 5.2... how much benefit to you think that will bring you?
My intention is to set XMP, enable MCE and leave it at that.
And the point is, you already have an NH-D15S anyway, which you can install and find out first hand. If its not the cooling you want you are then free to buy an AIO or go bonkers and build an expensive custom loop. I don't see that you have any dilemma at all.
You’re right Martin. I actually have nothing to lose and +$1000.00 to save on a custom liquid loop. I agree with you at keeping the CPU stock also.
Thanks for the adjustment. -
On 3/10/2021 at 4:51 PM, TheFamilyMan said:Obvious, the biggest factor on how high a CPU can be OC'ed under a NH-D15 is the CPU chip sample quality that's being OC'ed. I think that's that only thing really hold back the OC of my 10700k, which is sitting under a NH-D15S. To hit a higher OC would require voltages which I would not be comfortable using anyways, though custom closed-loop water, or a crazy huge (read: loud) AIO would likely handle it.
Thus my dilemma. My preference would be to stay with the Noctua D15S however, I’m thinking (and please correct me if I’m wrong) that just running the 10900k at stock would be at the upper limits temp wise. Where as, a very good friend of mine has been “plumbing” custom water cooling rigs for years assures be of loads of wiggle room temp wise should I OC this CPU.
What to do?... what to do..?David.

16 hours ago, Eman said:I have the 10900k and NH-D15, and the combo works surprisingly well. However, I have a pretty great case for air-cooling (CoolerMaster ATCS 840 from way back in 2009).
Max temp I've seen on a single core with FS2020 is 84 degC (spike during loading of sim), but the average temp during FS2020 over a 3 hour run is 59 degC with an ambient of 25 degC. Now, keep in mind, I'm GPU limited running FS2020 (RTX 3090 using VR with Reverb G2 with Open XR / TAA = 100/100). Max single core temp during a Cinebench run is 89 degC. Going to an all-core of 5.2 GHz, I see max single core temp of 98 degC during Cinebench, and an average temp of 69 degC during FS2020.
So, it really depends. If you're always CPU limited and want to prolong the life of your 10900k investment, it's probably best to keep the processor at stock with the NH-D15. YMMV.
Oh, and the Asus Maximus Hero XII Z490 is awesome. Love Asus motherboards, been buying them for years.

3 hours ago, martin-w said:Personally Dave, no I wouldn't. I even took the second fan off my sons NH-D14.
Doesn't matter if its the D15, D14 or D15S... a second fan only makes two degrees diference.
One fan or two, the velocity of the air passing through the cooler remains the same. The only thing that increases slightly with two fans is static pressure.
Same applies to other coolers too. Many aren't aware of how little an extra fan contributes.
Of course, if you don't mind the increase in fan noise for just two degrees go ahead.
Understood. I appreciate your input.
What would you recommend RAM wise? -
56 minutes ago, martin-w said:There's no difference in temp between them, the Chromax is just black. So no reason not to try your old cooler first before buying the Chromax.
I just have a single fan on it currently. Would you add another one?

1 hour ago, martin-w said:Well Dave, its nice to know I'm useful for something. 🙂
I haven't built my system yet but have the parts. So am not prepared to be definitive. It is the 10900k and yes will be the NH-D15S Chromax Black.
All I can say at this point is that 5 GHz on all cores with games should be within acceptable temps. 67°C to 77°C with an average of 56°C according to the review I posted. I'm guessing the sim would be averaging about 66 to 70. If you run some super tough stress tests though that run AVX temps may be low 90's. So I would steer clear of the latest AVX 512 etc. But of course, you can set an AVX offset in the BIOS.
If you have the D15S from your previous build I would just do what I intend to do, give it a bash and see how it copes.
I do have my NH- D15S with this current rig but was planning on doing what you are by getting the Chromax Black for this build.

Martin my Man!!
You were a huge help for my current build and got me drinking the Noctua Kool-Aid. Thanks for your reply here. Yes, I am planning to overclock and my preference is to stay on the Noctua train if I can without compromising the CPU Temp.
Thanks for your help.

I'm building or... I should say upgrading some parts in a RIG that I had a lot of help from this forum about 5 years back.
I would like to upgrade the CPU to an i9-10900k and would like your thoughts on if a Noctua NA-D15s would suffice to keep it cool?
I am a Noctua fan (no pun intended) and would prefer to stay air-cooled over liquid.
Also contemplating upgrading the MOBO to ASUS ROG Max XII Z490.
I appreciate your knowledge and vast experience.

4090 ROG? or... wait a little?

Good day from beautiful Halifax, Nova Scotia.
I'm ready to pull the trigger on an upgraded GPU. My question is, would it be best to wait a few months for the next best thing (which I don't even know what that is...) or, may as well get a 4090 now?
I appreciate your advice as always.
