  1. I am actually working on a review of this particular model along with the SSJ-100 Superjet as sort of a dual XP airliner piece.I had actually purchased both planes prior to deciding to write about them. The Dash 8 is seriously well done. If you have experience with the Flight 1 ATR72-500 under FSX you will find this similar in general function from a flight management perspective and FAR better looking and performing under X-Plane...not to mention way faster. Not to steal my own thunder...but it's a good 'un! Well worth the money and loads of fun to fly. Same goes for the SSJ actually.I'll eventually have the review in for publication. I have been busy with a transatlantic move/new job and this is literally my first weekend to enjoy flight simming :Peace:One caveat....I am still using XP9.7 so no comment regarding performance under XPX at the present time.

  2. Zach, I should try that Crusader Kings 2 next...I would get sucked into that one too.
Not to totally derail things here....I just bought Crusader Kings 2 a couple days ago and its pretty deep! It brings to life the bits of Medieval Total War II that are abstracted (the family relations/marrying/heirs/intrigue/lineage etc) and is pretty immersive. Actually I think it is the polar opposite of MTW2 as the battles are generally abstracted in favor of the Borgia-like scheming. Great stuff and probably the most accessible Paradox title yet (Hearts Of Iron was a chore lol). But if you feel the need to dive right down the rabbit hole....something insanely complex beyond belief (and still moderately easy to learn the mechanics of) would be Gary Grigsby's "War In The East" or John Tillers "Campaign Series" will utterly satisfy your inner grognard. Actually "Campaign Series" has been on my PC's ever since they were first published in 1997 (I think).Back to the flight simulator part of things.....I fly real weather/VATSIM-only/adhere to the published charts and stick to just a few aircraft that I take the time to get comfortable with. I felt pretty hardcore doing the transantlantic crossing in the B377 with no naviads for my recent review....or at least my tush did Big%20Grin.gif .But I would not go hanging labels.....as long as folks are enjoying what they do in this hobby and feel it is time well spent thats what is important.**edit**I also like to waterboard myself on the golf course....sigh....5 years left to get my handicap down from 18 in order to join the senior tour......yeah right :(

  3. People who have not downloaded Flight or DLC and won't be !!Why are you here voting on a Flight forum ???
Because I can.Because it is not a poll regarding personal opinion of Flight. And just because I have no interest in Flight for myself it would be foolish to ignore what others are saying about it. This is after all a flight simulator community.Similar to yourself posting in say....the X-Plane forum area with no interest in X-Plane right?

  4. My answer would depend on what sort of simulation you are referring to!For example...its not overly difficult to learn how to competently fly a complex simulated aircraft, navigate, and interact with ATC during the process of takeoff-landing-going from point 'a' to point 'b'.Now compare that to certain other sims where you might be required to fly fast at very low altitudes...in the dark....no autopilot...and dump a selection of boomboom on various targets while avoiding becoming a target. Or engage in a dynamic shooting war environment against other hostile aircraft.Never mind other types of sims more oriented towards strategy.....i.e. Gary Grigsby's "War In The East"....or perhaps trying to keep your battalion from getting turned to mush in "Steel Beasts".......One fella's "hardcore" is another fella's walk in the park.....and all perfectly valid :(

  5. I am not really fussed about Flight.....it is what it is.I chuckled a bit when I read this:Yes, we can display all Navaids, they are all there. And if you mouse-over any of them on the Map, you will see the Nav frequencies and hear the Morse. Now why would the developers have bothered putting Navaids in an arcade game for kids? They are all operational and you can fly all published approaches with IFR-capable aircraft, although the Icon and the Stearman are not.How does the reviewer know if you can actually "fly all published approaches" if the aircraft provided are not IFR-capable?The piece is generally well-written...but....and a rather large but.....I too found it rather patronizing and condescending. It is also biased to the point of being an opinion rather than a review. A lot of pure speculation as well (unless the writer is in the know and being annoyingly coy).I also find it interesting that there is no "What I Like/What I Dislike". Overall it is a departure from the usual objective nature one finds in reading AVSIM reviews past and present-although in fairness Luis did chuck himself under the bus by actually writing the article in the first place. I wouldn't have taken it on....but I have no real interest in the product.I have to agree with Stick (although the "low point" is more the childish antics displayed by forum members in recent weeks). And to echo Stick...it's just my opinion. And now I'll duck back under my customary X-Plane/FSX protective shell :Peace:

  6. Something has been seriously tweaked in this latest release.I just downloaded the latest beta and at KSEA with my settings my frames jumped from average 20-30 to 40-50 with no change to previously set rendering values :( .Now in fairness the RW weather at the moment there as read from the XPX METAR is CAVOK so the real test will be with the clouds. I noticed the cloud slider is now moved from 0% to 45%.....I'll report again when I get some crappy weather in there. Also I have the ATC/AI planes shut off.And yes it's an ASUS GTX 550ti Direct Cu 1Gb card with the brand new driver set from earlier in the week.If this is a sign of things to come.....whoa Nelly! Seriously awesome optimising going on...nice work LR guys.

  7. Sometimes I have trouble getting to the steak cause the menus are too small :)
LOL....as a complete derailing side note when I got told I needed reading glasses before Christmas I could not believe the huge improvement it made; however, they are useless with the PC. Other than the reading glasses my vision remains way better than normal.....still 20/15 at age 45 which is pretty good going considering the abuse they have had over the years (stereoscopes, light tables, imagery analysis, abnormal environments) and the rest of my family wear coke bottles to a varying degree.I put it down to my all consuming love of the humble carrot :( . Perhaps I may yet go forward with my cunning plan to obtain at least a Sport Pilot license just for giggles.Anyway...back to the UI discussion.

  8. Actually there is a distinct VSOA (Virtual Special Operations something-or-another) group of pilots within VATSIM that fly military transport and combat aircraft under some specific guidelines and mission profiles. This includes simulated USAF and other related military/Coast Guard types from around the world.I do believe with the clearance of participants you can even indulge in simulated intercept/escort...sounds kind of fun if you like that sort of thing. Best thing to do is get in touch with one of the organizations involved.....they are listed here:http://linksmanager....operations.htmlIf you don't want to get involved to that extent you are free to fly whatever you like and control (if available) will probably accomodate requests for various speeds/approaches as desired within reason.**edit**Just FYI the F-16 is an Air Force jet...not Army :( .

  9. I find flight planning boring, I feel no need to dabble with atc (1) a simulation can't come close to what happens rw 2)I can't stand the tedious keypresses needed to do all that). I like that unlike the rw, I can jump in a plane without preplanning the flight, doing preflights, and just go have fun!
I am the opposite in finding pre-flight planning almost as fun as actually flying. While you as a RW pilot may find it tedious I-as a former RW air and ground recce specialist find it endlessly fascinating. Even for sim VFR flights (and I do a ton of that) I like to know potential NAVAID's in case I screw up and find myself approaching IMC....or the sim weather does one of those abrupt changes.Never mind my also adoring navigation, maps, and all the associated stuff.Measure twice-cut once right? But it is all about different flying styles. And instead of Steve Jobs (bless his boots) fussing over 2 seconds he could have at least increased the screen size of my original Mac Classic....ahh the days of flight sim in black and white on a 9" screen. Actually that sucked pretty bad Big%20Grin.gif ."I actually had a short e-mail exchange with Austin on saturday regarding the airport selection dialog. Unfortunately he didn't like it because it would add more clutter to the UI"My feelings exactly and as mentioned several times. But hey he took the time to listen and perhaps continuing to offer suggestions for improvement (as options only) may result in something more to others taste.

  10. No problem:First a double Baileys to calm the nerves.Second your friendly nieghborhood 737 pro calmly talking through "push this and that button" to set up autoland.Third beg a cigarette (I don't smoke lol) and light the smoking lamp for everyone else....second hand smoke be damned in this circumstance.Fourth extract promise for lifetime Queen Mary 2/ship of choice/rail first class passage as I would not set foot in another aircraft ever again.Big%20Grin.gif**edit**In memory of the miserable global coach flights I have endured flying for business extracting a promise to stop fibbing about seat pitch and DVT potential and make the seats comfortable would be in order too!

  11. When you select the airfield-what do you do if you don't recall the identifier or exact airport name? What if you want to explore the airfields of Chile but have no idea what the airport identifiers are? I recall my rw flights by city usually as most pilots I know do-doesn't work in the search now. Sure-you can exit the program, and if the airport is in the US go to airnav.com which has a great database search-for Chile I found myself out of luck-was hard to find info-and I finally gave up exploring it-shame cause the scenery looks spectacular there.
I pre-plan every flight I make in FS Commander for both XP and FSX....even VFR as I can pull down the local weather and get VATSIM coverage confirmation all in one spot on top of all the planning-related stuff. But thats just me and I will acknowledge that not everyone has access to third-party planning tools or the luxury of a second adjacent PC for charts and other stuff (like posting while flying lol).**edit**I always know where I am going in advance anyway. I get tempted by the "get me lost" function sometimes but have yet to try it.

  12. Why not send your idea to LR directly? The UI concept looks pretty good...just bear in mind that XP users probably already have a workflow for setting up flights they are quite comfortable with and that UI might get in the way (i.e. be obtrusive). For example here is how I set up a flight:-Launch XP .exe.-Select aircraft I want to fly-Select livery when I remember to do so (lol)-Select airfield and positionAnd thats my menu interaction done. After that its just working with whatever plug-in I might need to use....FSE/XACARS/Clear Skies/Checklister/XSquawkbox....and everyone will use different plug-ins depending upon what individual preferences happen to be.Personally I would find it intrusive to be presented with a big "box o' stuff to select" when it already takes me just a couple seconds to get set up as things sit now.Perhaps if LR was to consider a UI such as the one presented in this thread they could make it optional....I would not want it forced on me and I think that goes kind of counter to LR's design philosophy.

  13. But do they ever move ?, Its going to be hard to do a convincing amount of Ai at a large airport with XP10's Ai limitations.
Oooops....I only fly on VATSIM so never use X-Plane AI aircraft/ATC in XP9/XPX.At least when they are moving its a "real" pilot on the controls. And I save frames as an added bonus. Anything else is just...scenery Big%20Grin.gif .But I do realize some people coming over from FSX prefer and expect the comings and goings of AI activity....fair 'nuff.**edit**The only time I use AI traffic/ATC with FSX these days is strictly for the odd review purpose.

  14. Hi folks,Thanks to the efforts of a clever individual at x-plane.org Joan has created a plug-in that seems to cure the horrendous winds-aloft issues present within X-Plane. Xplane NOAA GFS forecast weather 1.0rc2http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=15453Its not perfect and I think Joan is planning to optimize things a bit more (especially for VATSIM users) but I am flying high altitude (FL330) as I type this and the wind direction is correct...although the speed is somewhat lower than expected. But a huge relief from the constant 100kt winds encountered flying north or west using default XP real weather METAR interpretation.I am using this plug-in with XP9.7 and it should be ok in XPX too.Give it a shot and see what you think. Pay attention to the install instructions as it does require some XP-specific python downloads.CheersTed

  15. This is from the support section of the web site under General Topics:If you buy a product from any reseller and there is no public patches or service pack at our Updates section (upper right corner of our webpage), you don´t need it. In most of the cases packages from resellers already have all the patches included.
Errrr....not if the product was purchased in October 2011 and the patch/SP came out this month! But no worries...I sent them an email and am sure they will sort it out.**edit**As I typed the above I got the reply from Carenado!

  16. As opposed (again) to some practical results of perhaps not considering such things. (please read all the customer reviews) http://www.amazon.co...cm_cr_pr_sims_t
Ok....this is pretty funny. Providing a reference to amazon.com customer reviews with regard to X-Plane is practically perverse :( .**edit**On the plus column for X-Plane today I am currently in mid-flight at FL330 and guess what....winds aloft nightmare is finally over at least in XP9.7 thanks to a plug-in. Wooohoooo the high altitude stuff is now coming from the forcast as opposed to "take METAR double winds and add extra hate if flying north/west".
