Default Piper Cub FDE update?
HiI have recently been flying FS2004's default Piper J-3 at full realism and have found it to be VERY twitchy. Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm not an IRL pilot), but It doesn't seem to fly like the real thing. Is there a FDE update available to make the Cub fly more realistically?

DC-3 Engines: Cyclone vs Twin Wasp?
Is there any special reason why the Twin Wasp has that awesome "Pratt and Whitney hum"?

DC-3 Engines: Cyclone vs Twin Wasp?
HiI've recently have been reading up on the DC-3. Aside from the fact that the Cyclone is single-row and the Twin Wasp is double-row (and aside from the fact that the Twin Wasp sounds better), is there really any difference in the two radials from an engineering and pilot standpoint?

Engine Start: Mags first vs Mixture first?
HiI just had a quick question regarding piston engine startup procedures. From what I can tell, modern inline-engined aircraft (e.g. Cessnas, Pipers) have you push the mixture to Full Rich BEFORE you turn on the ignition. However, for radial-engined warbirds (e.g. Gooney Birds) you turn on the ignition (or starter) and get the prop turning FIRST, then you add the mixture. Why is that? Is there an underlying difference between the way the two engien types work?

ILS approach on VFR flight
Hi,If you're flying a VFR flight plan, is it against any regulations to shoot an ILS approach down to the runway? Is that even possible?

Alphasim U-2
Thanks for the advice, but I was asking more for advice on how to fly the aircraft. Very interesting information though!

Alphasim U-2
Hi all,I have started to learn to fly Alphasim's awesome U-2S. I have been trying to fly a high-altitude airway flight at FL700, from Nellis to Beale AFB. Apparently thinking that the U-2 is some kind of commercial airliner, ATC will direct me into what I call a "stepped climb"--incrementally bumping me up to my cruising altitude ("Climb to FL180"..."Climb to FL330"..."Climb to FL600"...etc). As per the instruction manual included with the aircraft package, I try to keep my speed as close to 100 KIAS as possible--even if this means cruising at idle throttle in between ATC-ordered altitude changes. Realistically, I cannot fly above FL350 or so. Above around 40,000 feet, the aircraft stalls--even with autopilot on!Is this accurate? Are real U-2 pilots allowed an "unrestricted climb" up to 70k feet, or do they also have to climb in increments? The Alphasim manual doesn't cover cruising below 56,000 feet. Is there any way I can accurately fly the thing up to FL700 without the aircraft stalling?

GPS Waypoint-only flight?
The Warwick Carter P-51Dv2 only has a VC; all gauges are 3d modeled. Is there any way I can somehow swap the panel's gyrocompass (to the left of the ADI) with the stock (e.g. Beech Baron, Mooney) HSI? The default VC radios are scattered all over the place; I was thinking of somehow incorporating the default Cessna radio stack into the main panel.

GPS Waypoint-only flight?
I'm flying Warwick Carter's P-51D Version 2. It has a Remote Indicating Compass and its radio stack has Nav1 and Nav2, but it doesn't have any nav instruments... I'm planning on flying some cross-country flights using airways, so I was wondering if it would be possible without the aid of VORs.

GPS Waypoint-only flight?
HiI have a number of aircraft that have the default GPS500 but have no VOR/ILS or ADF gauge. Is it possible (both IRL and in the sim) to make a flight using only GPS waypoints (NOT GPS-direct)?

P-51 VOR reciever location
Would if be realistic if I put the default Lockheed Vega's ADF into the Warwick Carter P-51? On the FS9 P-51D the RIC rotates; there is also a heading bug on the RIC. See below. Pictures 7 and 10: http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?133835-Warwick-Carter-s-P-51-In-Detail As far as I know, RMI's have the same features.

P-51 VOR reciever location
Hi I was looking up photos of P-51D cockpits and I've noticed that many cockpits have an RMI (they call it a "remote compass") tucked in the top left-hand corner of the cockpit. The trouble is, I cannot find the attached VOR antenna anywhere on the aircraft--according to my research, the antenna on the tail of some P-51's is virtually an earlier form of an RWR. Does anyone know where the VOR reciever on restored P-51's are located? Default 3737 gear problem, A/P issue
EDIT: TITLE SHOULD BE "737 gear problem..."HiThese questions require a long explanation, so please bear with me. I opened a saved jet-route flight from KSFO to KLAX (KSFO SNS CEANO ROBIE RZS LAX KLAX) using the default 737 as American Pacific 1123. I passed ROBIE, was handed off to LAX tower and set myself up for an ILS approach rwy 24R. I decided to have some fun and changed the weather theme from "Fogged In" to "Gray and Rainy". After capturing LOC and G/S, I decided tried to extend the gear, but the gear wouldn't go down. The nearer I got to the runway, the more the aircraft pitched and rolled to try to get back on the beam; my gear still couldn't go down. I disconnected AP and tried hand-flying, but my aircraft kept porpoising and eventually belly-flopped onto the rwy. Now to my questions: are the gear and A/P issues inherent bugs in the design? The gear worked fine before. Does it only do this during saved flights? Also, in the 737 do you have to hand-fly the ILS? I flew KSYR-KALB once and the aircraft couldn't find the KALB G/S or LOC; other aircraft acquired it and tracked it fine. Are these just bugs in my system or bugs in FS2004?

Harrier v2.55 patch
HiI D/L'ed the IRIS Harrier and the appropriate rcb VTOL gauges (rcbhcd10.zip). The thing is, the rcb readme says that I need the Harrier v2.55 patch. Where is it? I looked on avsim but all I could find were repaints :blink:Also, when I tried to use the rcb gauges with the unpatched Harrier, the hover system does not work. I tried a VTOL takeoff, but the Harrier just would not lift off the ground. I lowered the weight, fuel, everything--the Harrier just did not want to hover or take off vertically. Any tips?

Commercial jets navaids
So from what I understand, to fly a waypoint (e.g. DERBB) just flip the nav/gps switch to "gps" and keep nav hold on until you pass the waypoint. Then you switch the nav/gps back to nav, right?

Omnipresent Oakland Center?
I tried but ATC wouldn't let me. Could it have been to get over the Sierras? :( Thanks for the info, but that doesn't explain why I had to tune in so many different frequencies for Center. Good info though :D
