  1. Thanks for the replies. What I'm really hoping to find out is where all the files are. I don't mind making a new CFG file, but I'd like to make sure I don't lose my saved flights, flight plans, etc, and the mission completions. Ah well, at least I'm running now on my other hard drive. I have 3 HDs installed at the moment, and a few spares laying around. I think for now I will continue to migrate what I can without too much trouble, and just build a new pair of PCs as soon as I can - one wild beast for FSX and one tamed & stable for the business.Yes, Windows 7 and Vista are supposed to be able to boot to new hardware, but I couldn't get it to happen in mine. I used to be in IT, and I have Microsoft training on that aspect of Vista. It doesn't always work though, and I don't remember why. There might be a small detail I overlooked, but many many searches didn't point me to whatever detail it might have been.
  2. Hi,Recently my motherboard died. My motherboard was so old, there was no direct replacement available from a local store. I could scarcely even find one with LGA775 and still have enough plugs for everything. Very few available online, but could not wait for shipping. I ended up having to go with a board with only 2 memory slots.Since it was a totally new board, I couldn't coax Windows 7 into booting again. In order to not risk destroying all my data - running my business from this PC as well - I just used a separate empty HD I already had, got Windows running on it.I now want to recover my FSX installation. I want to keep all the saved flights, flight plans, mission completions, etc. I tried running FSX from the other drive, to no avail. While I'm capable of "probably" finding everything, and eventually getting it working again, I'm asking here since I'm sure many of you have had to do this before. Aptitude and skill are no match for experience and wisdom. So, what do I need to do to be sure I salvage everything?
  3. I've had to deal with this a lot as an IT guy configuring Dell systems for CAD engineers. You might find that the Dell case isn't standard and won't fit some/most/all aftermarket power supplies. Their motherboards may not be standard ATX either, even though they might appear to be at first glance. You can see how that might create a rather frustrating situation - can't mount the PSU in the existing case, can't mount the existing motherboard in a replacement case.I recall one situation where we just ended up hacking up the case so we could mount the more powerful PSU for the graphics card.Perhaps if it's not too late, send it back and build a system or order one from a company who uses non-proprietary parts and doesn't skimp on important bits.
  4. Greetings fellow aircraft and simulation enthusiasts.I'm new here, and relatively new to modern simming. My first experience with Flight Simulator was many years ago, on my grandfather's PC; MSFS 3.0 or 4.0. I distinctly remember that flying in MSFS was the very first cause of me ever staying awake past 4:00AM.Prior to that, I have always loved aircraft. As a younger child, I would always badger my parents into taking me to the local airport (KMRY) to watch the planes take off and land. Any time we'd drive anywhere near it, I'd beg to go. That airport has a nice observation deck, right over the arrivals area and next to the gates, and also looking at just about the right spot on the runway where most of the jets would rotate. Back then you didn't need a ticket to get inside.Today, I'm 32, a former IT geek turned marketer, trying to get the most out of FSX. I bought it for myself over the holidays, along with a basic joystick with rudder control. I expect by the end of this year I'll have built a whole new multi-monitor system with a yoke, pedals, and all the bells and whistles. My current system gets about 3 FPS if I push all the sliders to the right, heheh. Also will likely get some of the nicer payware aircraft and scenery.I found this forum this week while searching about hardware performance in FSX, and appreciate everything I've read so far.
