FTX Global, is it worth it?
Sorry, i'm a newbie poster, but for me no. I already have fsglobal landclass worldwide, utx and gex for all regions and use dx10 so as a result, for me no. Personally i have also had issues previously with orbx products not playing nice with other addons needing some fixes and orbx is a company that plays by the new rules of life, these being "its always someone elses fault". Having said that, if i did not have any landclass or current replacement textures then i would be interested but irrespective of company alliegance or products used i am seriously starting to believe that a good setup can only be either all orbx products or all non-orbx products for future compatability issues Having said all of the above, i would not yet be using it anyway as having been slightly singed a few times, nothing that been on the market less than around 3 months will get bought and installed anyway as I await all the pros and cons to come in Your mileage wil obviously vary based on what you already have, but since most of my flying is done at >FL250 the whole subject is a little moot anyway Regards Graham

How do you test? (And some personal conclusions)
I have 3 test areas that I use and have set up three save flights for the same. As I do most of my flying in the UK.. they are as follows.... 1) Open scenery roughly half way between Manchester and Edinburgh at 3500 feet.. used for ground scenery and flying straight and testing smoothness on banking. 2) Coming in over the coast at Dover (starts humming.,. there'll be bluebirds over etc) at 5000 ft as your starting to pick up some complex areas 3) Approach to Heathrow (I have UK2000 and all the other UK London airports) at 2500 because of AI traffic and scenery density. I then do all three with both a GA and a tubeliner and in each case I use clear skies and a set theme with lots of clouds. So thats a total of 9 tests for each setting change. Ultimately though, what it means is I have developed some 3 different settings files, depending on whether I am fluing GA, Tubeliner and where. Again, I have no idea about FPS thesedays and dont even look at it, to me it's 1) Is it smooth and no jaggies or artifacts. 2) Do all my controls get responded to immediately. Regards Graham

A couple of pics
Greetings all... Brand new to this screenshot thingy, but thought I would try and get some feedback for the future.. so a couple of pics from my recent flights... First.. 'Twas a dark and Stormy night.. A Twotter heading towards Guernsey and getting surrounded by thunderstorms late evening. Second.. Crossing into France on the way up to the UK from Gibralter in a Falcon. Thanks for looking, and would welcome feedback. Regards Graham

Altitude and ATC
Greetings all. I'm an FSX weekend pilot, just for fun, nothing serious, but have noticed an issue when flying that I don't know if it's me or just the system so am hoping for help. I often fly jets and regularly hop along using flight levels. I also use real weather settings injected into FSX from FSGlobalWeather or Opus (same issue on both). After passing 18,000 I always reset my altimiter to 29.92 going up and back to appropriate setting when going down and the altitude jumps appropriately, however, the altitude shown by FSX using shift F12 still shows the altitude based on the baro pressure when above 18000. When the pressure is off by a margin from 29.92 below 18000, ie 29.62 or 30.42 for example, this is enough to get ATC telling me that I am at 0 feet above (or below) my assigned altitude and to climb or descend as appropriate. alternatively I get you are out by 200/300/400, climb or descend when my alt is showing exactly the FL assigned. Is there something I am missing, or is this just "an issue" with default ATC and FSX? alternatively, are there settings I can change to give me a greater variance before ATC starts yelling? Regards and thanks in advance for any help. Graham

A new computer only for FSX and P3D
Many thanks for the input and advice OK, 2 x 8gig ram (I'll stick with 16 just in case P3D pulls off the 64 bit version . Is 1866 good for this or should I go higher? Cooler to be a nh-d14, meaning the ram can be no higher than 44mm from my reading today. Also power suppy upped.. 850 with 80+ gold ... done I suspect that on this build I will not delidde and try for 4.5 without an increase in voltage if poss. Again, many thanks, very much appreciated. A new computer only for FSX and P3D
Greetings all. So, at Xmas, I got into FSX havhing been a long time hobby developer in other 3D games and got hooked.. Badly hooked. About this time last year, I built a new PC for home use, but did NOT take into account some of the specifics for FSX as I hadn't started playing then. As a result, whilst the PC is great, it is not a great design for FSX, although it is a great design for general use, so the time has come to build my FSX pc. I have a number of givens and druthers that i need to accomplish.. As follows... 1). Not so worried about frame rates as long as it is smooth and the response is there (frames rates are important, smoothness more so) 2). I use a lot of scenery and airports, i fly a lot in the uk and have all the uk2000 airports. The london area drops my current machine to a stuttering wreck with all the uk2000 airports set pretty much to minimum 3). I use my traffic 5.4 pro to add some life with settings at around 15% but would like to increase that to around 20 - 25% 4). I use gex, utx and gsx worldwide and also opus and fex for clouds, weather and textures 5). I dont expect to run on every slider hard right, but i do expect to have power to spare, even when flyiing around London 6). Want to be ready if and when P3D goes 64 bit and can use multi core 7) machine will ONLY run FSX, P3D and appropriate addons. Okay based on that list, here' s my selection and would really appreciate any input from all you people that know what they are talking ajbout, unlike me Motherboard Asus P8Z77-V pro ATX motherboard 1155 socket Z77 Chip. Intel i7-3770k. 3.5 GhZ. With a view to overclocking to 4.5 if i can get it nice and stable and cool enough with air cooling, or at least to 4.2 min Memory. Make not decided, 16 gig 1866hZ C9 ram in 4 sticks Cooler. Cooler master Hyper 212 EVO R2 Power supply. Corsair modular 650 or 700 Disks. Plain CD/DVD drive, probably LG and Samsung 512gB pro SSD GPU. ASUS Nvidia GTX 680 4gB Case. (If it fits. Still need to check the cooler and gpu) LIAN- LI A05FNB Would really appreciate your input on this to get the best setup I can for now and for what may come in the next year or so. Regards Graham

worth changing from ATI to Nvidia?
moria replied to moria's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcMany thanks for all the input.. I think what i am heading towards here is actually making a dedicated fsx machine and then the main machine can go back to what it was designed for, general use. Thanks again for the input Regards G

worth changing from ATI to Nvidia?
Greetings all. (first post here so please be gentle ) Have been reading a lot of the forums etc, and am fairly new to flightsimmimng. I have a new machine, but unfortunately I built the machine before I got well into FSX. I got a non-overclockable chip and a motherboard designed for stability not overclocking (that'll teach me) but even so, I get reasonable frame rates except in areas with large add on airports. As a guide, I am fixed at 30fps and get that in most areas except the airports then it starts to stutter around 9 - 15 fps (yes I have traffic down and settings down to compensate) However, one easy change would be to switch from the ATI graphic card (AMD Radeon HD 7900 series + 3 Gb) to an Nvidia card and from reading, the best bet would seem to be a 4gb GTX 680 series, but would really value some input as to would this be worth while and if so, which version of a 680 would be best. I will consider a processer change later, but currently I am looking to do this in stages. Your insite would really be appreciated. Regards Graham
