  1. Thanks, this is interesting. "fear of death" seems to bother people. I don't quite understand that. I certainly could have left it out, but you most understand that the "fear of death" factor plays a real part in a simulator. There are simply things you would do/try/not care about if there was the potential of bodily harm.

Also, when I took a flying lesson once, and was taking off, I was someone scared myself. It made me much more aware of my surrounding, and that is something a simulator cannot achieve (yet).

No problem though. It's all good, and I am sorry if I offended anyone. This is a great community.

LOL! I 100% English Speaker.... No offense taken though. I am not very bright either.

Sorry bout that Stevefromio, you sounded like .....  - something, LOL!

Yep, the fear of death, big, big taboo, uhuhuuuuu... :(

I forgot, it´s a simulator, we can do what we want, also use it as a tool to overcome fear of flying, and maybe even fear of death?

    :P

  2. I don't know if there are any airline pilots on the forum, but if so, I would love to ask you a question.

If you took the physical factors and fear of death from flying a commercial airliner, on a scale from 1 to 10, how accurate do you think PMDG aircraft compares to the particular airplane you fly?

Why don´t you send an email to Capt. Randazzo himself?

    "Fear of death from flying"?

Are you sure this is the right hobby for you?

PS: I must admit that I never, ever fly THY again, they ARE the worst, and the RW pilots here on Avsim - if they knew about the stuff going on there - would agree with me.

  3. Loading is instant, and that´s a positive, not all negative about it...

@era66: It´s a standalone product, textures only, there will be a weather engine later AFAIK.

Then again, like you mention: "It seems that REX Game Studios is unbundling the older REX Essential Overdrive into separate packages of REX4 Texture HD and the upcoming REX Weather HD"

    That´s exactly my thought too!

New and clever business model maybe..?

  4. Same with the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok, from Nonthaburi and up north, nothing.

This product was released to fast, endless problems with it, and I don´t like the roads, awful zig-zag over the whole scenery. They need to make a config tool like with UTX, so people can choose what to show, but that´s probably very, very difficult to get, since JV has decided to know what´s best for us all, Amen...

"You can benchmark a FSX machine quite accurately using FutureMark 3DMark 06. I recall correctly several years ago when my first build using a Core 2 duo X6800, an Asus Striker Extreme with an Nvidia Chipset back then, and a 8800GTX, singles HDD I believe that system scored about 7,000 to 8,000 on that benchmark."

I don´t use or care about benchmarks with regards to FSX, it´s useless, only OCD people find some fun in that.

How is the actual performance in FSX when you have loaded a flight and hit that start button, that´s the key, the secret, but people don´t want that apparently...

  6. @flyer10: Is the Seagate Momentus X Hybrid an old HDD?

I got off the "crazy wild update wagon" years ago, I use the sliders in FSX adjusting to my taste of smooth, stutterfree flying. Autogen is just a pain in the eyes, down to normal with that, plus several other tricks like reducing trees and ugly houses etc.

I have awesome respect for NickN, but IMO he´s just turned sour, bitter and angry, and still want to keep an audience by making FSX install and tuning a kind of rocket science. It´s not, just adjust the settings to the capacity of your hardware, it´s very easy, they (Aces) made them sliders for a reason, right?

  7. I've always heard that you shouldn't put the OS and FSX on the same mechanical drive. That configuration may lead to too much activity with FSX and the OS hitting up the drive simultaneously. That isn't a problem with an SSD because there isn't a moving actuator arm and head.  (But I've been wrong before.)

Like martin-w says, there are many "Bibles" to follow, or just to dismiss and ignore!

Most of all the bible-stuff was written for 2.0 GHz Core2 CPU´s, DDR2 Ram and GeForce2/300+ series or ATI 4000+ GPU´s  etc.

With todays hardware it really doesn´t matter that much, just turn off UAC, and then install at default location. I have that on my notebook, with no problems at all.

  8. IMHO I'd stay away from the hybrids. 240gig SSD's are starting at around $150.00 and the price's on SSD's are heading down.

    Why?

I have a Seagate Momentus XT 500 Gb, fast, solid, no problems.

I understand the OP is on a tight budget, a hybrid would be perfect for both OS and FSX.
