I think I figured it out - a couple of weeks ago MSFS reset to default settings. Whilst I turned AI traffic off in the traffic settings menu, the AI traffic slider was still set to 100 yet greyed out. I had to switch AI traffic back to on, move the slider to 0 and switch it back off again. AI traffic had also been left on in the data settings menu which I've now switched off.

For a couple of reasons - AIG was taking up a lot of space on my hard drive and I also had issues with aircraft appearing pink or with invisible tails.

Since installing FSLTL and removing AIG I have an issue where aircraft are circling airports at low altitude. I also get some generic liveries inserted when I only use RT + PSXT (I don't have the FSLTL traffic injector or AI traffic turned on in the sim). I also see some aircraft on TCAS in my Fenix A320 (when I thought that system didn't show any PSXT traffic). Any ideas or anyone getting the same issue? FWIW I have live and static matching both set to 3 so it was my understanding that it would only show liveries with a model and airline match.
