Just wanted to share the funny story of the flight I've just had. It was a standard short hop from Manchester EGCC to Dublin EIDW in the stock CRJ-700, mainly to test out the new cabin crew VoxScripts for in-flight announcements. Things were all going great, despite the pretty stiff turbulence we ran into over the Irish Sea, and the thunderstorms we could see in the distance. We're coming in for final approach, Jess (flight attendant) is reading the landing message to the great unwashed, and we're nicely on the glideslope, first time around. Now I have a problem with Trav picking up spurious sounds from my external speakers and interpreting them as a barrage of commands, but I'm getting into the habit of muting my mic all the time and unmuting to give specific commands, which cuts down on all that. But as I'm responding to ATC giving us final runway approach clearance, Trav hears something that he interprets as "Shutdown all engines." Fair enough he does ask for confirmation, but he's oviously in the middle of a queue of misheard "instructions" that he has to work through before he can interpret my frantic shouts of "Negative! Cancel that! Disregard!" And unfortunately one of those queued instructions he interprets as "do that". Engines shut down at about 1000 feet. Hilarity ensues. It takes me some time and flailing around before I work out how to reverse Trav's shutdown, during which time he helpfully points out "We're going down." I'm about 20 degrees nose up and I can still see rooftops out the window. But engine one sparks into life and the ship yaws sharply to the right and starts to get positive climb, closely followed by engine two. I don't know how close we came, but it was felt closer than anything else I've done without crashing. Naturally we had to go missed approach and do another circuit before coming in for a much less eventful landing. Half an hour later, my nerves are still frazzled. It was definitely the most intense FS flight I've done. I don't think I'll be flying with Trav for a while, as I'm nervous that he's liable to have another "episode" like that. Besides, he was found in the washroom of the EIDW pilot's lounge having slipped and hit his head on the sink. Several times. He'll not be fit to fly for a while :-) *** And yet, though you'd think the above would be the setup for some kind of moan or complaint about MCE, truth is I'm loving it. With the new purser scripts, the mechanic interactions and ATC running at about a 85-90% hit rate, it's really massively helping the feeling of immersion in the sim. Even though, intellectually, I know I've just programmed in how the purser might react when I thank her, on a gut level it feels like a natural interaction. It's worth putting up with a few teething troubles like the above. I just... don't want to fly with Trav for a while :-) Dr V
